Done.... That is pathetic that they are even thinking about scapping this rebate.

They should be increasing and promoting it!

Done. I also believe that govt. should be looking at the number of houses now being built with no eaves.

This increases the heat uptake by the houses and probably mandates the fitting of air con. Houses in most places of Oz need wide eaves and/or verandahs to minimise heat.

I really wonder if the electrical supply infrastructure can supply the ever increasing load or whether we are going to need solar panels and/or home generators for those inevitable blackouts.

I agree Ron with the houses bit, all these new ugly slab houses with no eaves or any form of overhang from the roof to provide any shade.
I also believe all new houses should have solar hotwater systems and a rain water tank for garden use.

Agreed on the all of the above points

Regarding the rain water tanks for garden use, there are some communities out near the mines where they have banned people having gray water tanks as the pollution from the mines pollutes the water too much.

I don't quite understand the logic myself as you should only use rain / gray water for washing your car or watering your plants, so what difference does it make if it falls from the sky or comes from you water tank?

I agree that the solar rebates should continue. However there are a number of points to consider before we all jump on the solar (photovoltaic) band wagon:

Positives:
Australia has lots of sunlight
Most people have lots of spare roof area
Apart from production and disposal, solar panels have no detrimental environmental impact (during operation)
Small grid interactive solar installations have lower transmission losses than centralised power generation

Negatives:
Solar panels are (by far) the most expenive option of all currently available power generation methods
They generate most power during the middle of the day when demand is relatively low (highest morning and evening)
For commercial generation, other means are needed for night time and peak loads

A lot more work is required to make photovoltaics which are cheap enough to be economically viable - and like all technology - mass-production lowers the prices.

But there are other options - e.g. "solar towers" which are use the sun to heat air which then drives turbines, etc, etc.
