    Crappy ISP service

I signed up with a 24mth contract with IInet for a 1.5mb broadband lite for my two daughters who live with their mum..
6months into the contract I get an email informing me the 1.5mb connection is costing them too much and the $59.95 per month charge for me is either going up $20 per month or dropping to a 512kb connection..man I'm I dirty over this..I signed up for a 1.5mb connection and their in house problems or marketing errors are not the responsibility of the consumer/end user. anyone else with IInet get this email?? I have initiated a complaint with the telecommunications ombudsman at this unethical act.

it is only unethical if the contract precludes it....

after veridas went broke the other week a few of the bigger players are rationalising i imagine...

and their dam mail server suxs rocks....

    Lousy internet service.

I have just gone through the same situation. Have just moved (on the 5th), and changed from iinet, for the same reason. Have just got back on the net this afternoon after a week of being down. My wifes who runs her buisness on the net has not been happy. Changed to g-node, and am happy for the time being. Even though the rapid transfer had the net down for 7 days. Good site for internet comparison is:

    www.whirlpool.net.au

    Good luck with your endevours,

    Ken

Got a very similar email from Exetel.
Pay more, or pay the same and get less download.

Surely you can opt out of your contract in these circumstances.

    - I would think so; but it depends what it says in your contract

My ISP done that to me too put my fee up by $15 a month
Guess what I churning, (fast transfer) to another ISP next week.
I don't know what they are thinking, surely they know what it costs before they offer the service. idiots, like they think they won't loose customers.
But I suppose if they do the ones that stay and pay the extra will compensate for the loss.
Anyway bye-bye ISP, this other ISP I found is actually $10 cheaper than I was paying originally, so in a way it was a good thing they put up thier price.

If you want a new ISP check out this search feature:

just like to point out I have nothing to do with this site.

I thought a contract meant you paid $X for a set ammount of time for a set limit of downloads and speed. I know ISP's change their plans etc all the time, but they should have to honour a contract until it expires.
I hope the TIO will investigate it.
I know that my current ISP can't change the terms of my contract for the 18 months I am with them, because it is connected with a broadband connect subsidy.

At least you can get broadband, they wont even give it to us at all. We rang telstra yesterday to enquire about this wizbang wireless broadband, you can only get it on a laptop and 3Gb downloads will cost you $200/month, or you can get 1gb for $80/month.

DD- young girls dont need a huge download speed just get a cheap dialup plan, our telstra plan is unlimited download for only $25/month. I want broadband so i can download all the movies, and we cant get it. Matt

Yup - as our IT manager I manage about 1,700 of our customers who use the 1.5mbps iiNet plan concerned here. I've been inundated by sour clients over that email from iiNet so I've called iiNet and let them know what I and my clients think. They will most likely lose all of that business as my clients rely on 1.5mbps being available at peak workload times because they shuffle large graphics files around our network and need all the speed they can get.

I too installed the iiNet offering because we were going to get an advertised service for a fixed length of time for an advertised and agreed rate.

I will be looking for another vendor this afternoon and cancel as many of these iiNet lines as possible.

I was in a simmilar situation last year, couldn't get broadband.
So.. I found a company that does BB via sattelite.
You end up getting a dish on your house like a foxtel dish and pay about $10ish a month more than standard BB but once you have BB it's real tought going back to dial up.
Mostly it was fine, on a couple of realy stormy days it would slow down but it was still better than dial up.

Also if you are lucky enough to have two phone lines or you get two installed you can put x2 modems in your comouter and get twice the speed of normal dialup.
There's also an outdated system called ISDN.

There's a few option to look at instead of BB.
    Steve
