ME: Can additional driving lights (not headlights or fog lights) used primarily for country driving be fitted to the roof of a vehicle due to space limitations of the front?
RTA: These lights would be classified as "Driving Lights" and must be mounted at the front of the vehicle, must not obscure the drivers view and must not emit any glare onto the windscreen, all of which means they cannot
be mounted on the roof.

Police cars and trucks, ambulance and fire vehicles, all have roof mounted lighting arrays - so how's their read on ADRs?

There is provisions for search/work lamps, but they cannot (normally) face the front and must be switched on independently of any other lights - I think they cannot be switched on from a 'normal' driving position.
I am trying to get some more info/rules from RTA based on ADR13/00 which deals with driving lights and according to para 7.3 - DRIVING LIGHTS there is no restriciton on position other than they have to face front... so basically you could mount driving lights on the roof. We'll see what they say. Might be worth while to get that sort of info on paper (or email) from each state's and territory's authority... not sure if the Swiss Canton of Geneva has anything like that but you never know - but I am not going to ask - simply don't care :cool: :p and the only Landy I have here is my moutain bike - probably the most ecologically friendly one - not counting the methane produced after a cheese fondue :blush:

I wonder how LR got away with this regulation when the Tomb Raider Defender was sold here with 4 roof rack mounted driving lights.
I wouldn't mind fitting 2 or 4 lights to my roof rack. It's a 3/4 length rack & it's fitted towards the rear. I wouldn't have a glare on the bonnet or windscreen issue.
Cant glare can be fixed with a simple reflector or light defuser (whats the problem)
Ron I think the Speno and Highrail would be classified as work lights and they are only used offroad (well on track)
The 130 crew cabs look good at night though, all lit up
