    A very difficult vehicle choice.

Hi Guys, I am trying to get my first LR. If I can I will explain my difficult situation and I would really appreciate some advice into vehicle choice. I am into 4x4ing and have a diesel nissan with locker, satnav, snorkel, lift, muddies etc... The thing is, its a dual cab and useless for the family (not to mention unsafe in a crash). I want a work car to put stuff in the back and be able to lock it and tow a trailer, and also allow the wife and kids into on weekends and trips etc.. I like older cars and my budget is only allowing me to stay in that area anyway. (BTW my dream car is a series 2 RR with a TDI 300 diesel) So my idea was originally a Tdi disco. I thought it was perfect, and it probably is. I then noticed that range rovers are very good value and on gas are probably cheaper to run than my current diesel. So I drove a few original rovers with the 3.5 and honestly they are a bit crappy. One had a 3 speed auto and was really crap. I realise there will be one out there for me but the disco interior is probably more thought out and stronger. So far I have come up with the following fors and againsts.

    Range rover
    for
    better off road
    tougher for work/tow
more comfortable on trips and off road
    more capable
    look tougher

    against
    use more fuel
    cant get diesel
    cant get 7 seats

    Discovery
    for
    modern interior
    cheaper to maintain
    use less fuel
    more acceleration
    7 seats available
    diesel available
    reliablilty

    against
weaker than RR for off road and tow
    less comfortable off road
less capable off road than RR

    Against both
I have only seen gas tanks in cab I dont like that idea

Please correct me if my assumptions in any of these fors and againsts are wrong because I dont know better right now.

So my main quesitons are based on my assumptions, but would a RR or disco be better. I am looking for ability, economy, comfort, and of course reliability. I am split down the middle right now. If anyone has owned both cars or knows which is the better lifestyle choice that would be excellent. Sorry about the very long post and thanks in advance.

Not too sure why you say a Series 1 Disco is worse than a classic Rangie offroad -- they are identical in wheelbase and set-up.

From what you have described, I would be going for a late model Series 1 Disco (300 TDi) '98 if you can get one.

What you need is a series 2 Disco V8.

Now that already clears up a lot of confusion I had about a disco vs RR. Can I then assume the onroad ride is the same? cause then I can start to lean toward the disco already.

I honestly cant afford a series 2. I will want to put an v8 on gas or get a TD. BTW I have already made one decision on my own, its going to be an auto.

I have a classic rangy and a disco 1 and they do ride differently... i love the ride in the rangy but the disco is more modern... but the rangy has better articulation but the disco sticks to the road.

They do have different personalities that's for sure... so forget the debate and go a Defender
