Land Rover, which one is best?- Your Opinion?

While I don't like Defenders as all round vehicles - I would have to say a Defender Extreme TD5 would have to be my choice as the most capable offroad landy straight off the showroom floor. - for more general use it would have to be a Disco 3 TD SE.

Which one Reads .. we need more detail?? ;) I remember test driving a D90 in South-Africa with the 2.8i BMW engine .. to say "it went" is an understatement! :D

I agree with the D90 being the best offroader .... but considering most people will carry a lot of gear and more than two people .. the 110's load carrying puts it ahead of the 90 for me.

Surely what's best varies by the type of off-road? And how often you do it? And how quickly?

I think it would be hard to argue that anything since in the Defender line was better than a V8 90 (but then there's always the water crossing). From what I've seen, LR have been slowly reducing the strength of components to save money, so the earlier in the model line the stronger the drivetrain, and the rest is essentially unchanged. I'd go for the 90 over the 110, and unfortunately, JD, that excudes the 4BD1.

The D3 has to be a contender. What it lacks in mechanical ability (e.g. articulation) it more than makes up with electronic ability. But it's fragile compared with a 90 or Classic Range Rover.

If I were racing with an essentially unlimited budget, I'd go the RRS. Any faults would be immediately rectified by the in-car computer being used by the navigator :D

Agree, I honestly thin no one vehicle will fit this label ... if things like ergonomics, interior comfort are to be considered .. any Series or defender variant will take a back seat

i would have thought the design and manufacturing defects would have been well and truly ironed out by now especially in the rebored 2.8 which I think is the ducks nuts when it comes to landy engines.

Land Rovers in the original form (pre 1986) were the toughest. I personally thik JDNSW is spot on Land Rovers went down hill significantly after this year even identical components were made from lesser materials (check Salisbury diffs once the disk brake models came in the component materials changed significantly)
The 4BD1 was a real engine with the ability not only to perform but the ability to take severe punishment and wholesale abuse.

Well, off the showroom floor, in oz, the 110 isuzu 4 spd would have to be the best for all out ruggedness and longevity. The RRclassic 2 door for off road suppleness and on road ride.( learn to live with the body roll)

Thats why I wanted the best of bothworlds and stuck a turbo on an ex county 4BD1, intercooled it and shoehorned it into my RR classic. With a 4 spd box. And a Salisbury rear end..... I LOVE this vehicle for everything, towing, touring, off road, commuting, and it is very economical. And filled with leather and walnut. and has an imperious driving position.....I must now stop myself.

Everyone has their own views on what suits them best though.
