Steve, you seem a little confused.....
Best Landrover......
The one you get to sit in on a regular basis!!!
Question over.....
(Although we all truly know its a 2001 Tombraider Edition Defender, with lots of bits)
Hi All
Here's one to put the cat among the pigeons!
Which Landy is/was the best off road, standard as it came from the factory.
What’s your opinion?
Obviously it’s the Classic Range Rover
Nice and comfortable good clearance, air conditioning, what more could you want!
But then I might be a little bias![]()

My one steve! Best Disco I've ever driven every day. In fact the best Land Rover in my street.
(But I did like my Bronco).

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
To answer a question like that you have to define "best", and one man's best is not the same as another's.
You could make a good case for the 80" Series 1, as its small size and light weight enabled it to go places that later models can not go.
As you are talking about offroad, clearly the only ones that would qualify are those that you can hose out, effectively counting out a lot of later models.
If you look at the power plant, quite clearly for offroad use the best all round engine ever fitted was the 4BD1.
This leads to the conclusion that the "best" would have to be either the Stage 1 with this engine or the 110. I tend to favour the 110 because of the more compliant suspension, probably the military Perentie 4x4 variant. Later variants of the 90/110 miss out because they have a more complex, less reliable and less durable engine, together with backward steps such as the lack of galvanising on body capping and grease lubricated wheel bearings. The 90 misses out because this engine was never fitted to it, although a 90 with this engine would be hard to beat. But the 90 has always been extremely rare in this country, probably ultimately because it cannot carry the loads Australians feel they need to lug round with them.

1998 defender 110 2.8 300tdi.
There is no "logical" sense why the 4BD1 was better than the late model 300tdi's. How many armed forces around the world use Defenders? How many of those Defenders are fitted with 4BD1 compared to 300tdi?
I think the 300tdi offer a more drivable, economical and more versatile Defender.

It depends on your definition of better!Originally Posted by Greylandy
Yes, the 300tdi is more powerful, quieter, smoother and lighter than the 4BD1.
BUT! it has a turbocharger and intercooler as additional complications and maintenance/repair items, it has a camshaft drive belt (complete with manufacturing/design defects to the setup and regular replacements), it is fussier about the fuel it uses, and less tolerant of abuse. It is also less likely to do as high a mileage without major repairs, although both engines are capable of very high mileages before overhaul. I have done no costing, but it would not surprise me if the added maintenance (cam belts, cleaning intercooler, replacing inlet hoses, turbo overhauls, fuel lift pump replacements etc) on the tdi more than made up for the improved fuel economy.
