Looked at a County 3.9d today

I had a weak moment and visited this car dealer today. He could'nt tell me if it had aircon when I rang, as I was chasing something that I could swaparoonie around with my County and end up with air vents- god I miss this feature.
Anyway, it seemed a good buy @ $8 grand, but I told him straight away it was not what I was looking for as it has aircon with sealed vents.
Nevertheless we talked Landies for an hour
The way he described it on the phone was it was not much, when it was actually not bad at all, there was a folder in the console with receipts for at least 6 grand over the last 6 years.
Anyway, if anybody did contact him- he has had a dozen interstate calls- PM me and I can give a run down on it.
456,000 on the speedo and it has a current N.S.W. pink slip.
    Anybody's from here??

The 1986 110 had the Isuzu 3.9 fitted from new. It won't be anything else.

Hey, Deejay, it's pretty easy to modify County vents with Series/Defender parts, so that you get the airflow through the lower windsreen area. Mine works real good.....but the vents will be painted black soon, to retain the correct 'look'.

the dash vents are blanked of with steel as part of the fire wall.

I'd immagine it would be a bit of work to take out most of the upper dash to cut and trim this out.

I think the 5 speed box would be the biggest worry. At that milage the box would have taken a pounding from the 4bd1. If you happen to take it for a drive see how it engine brakes down a big hill or mountain range. my lt85 transfer would almost always jump into neutral. increases the heart rate.

good motor, very little electrics, excellent torque. very loud especially through the air intake. not much point having a good stereo. I considered a walkey talkee head set for communicating with people inside the car.

not much can go wrong with those doors as you probably already know.

Things to consider that will cost money are fuel lift pump, rear drum brakes are not real good, engine stop control is probably on its way out (12v is not easy to find), fuel tank, 3 bolt steering box, input shaft, shocks/suspension, pitted swivel pin (leaking oil from front seal), wheel bearings, a frame ball joint, fiddled with electrics, corroded electrics, etc. you can spend a fortune on this stuff.

having said all this, i have stuck with the 4 bd1. I think it makes a great truck for off road trips. If you do strike troubles at least the Toyota mechanics recognise what they are looking at under the bonnet. I even had a Daihatsu lift pump fitted to my car by a mechanic at Bamaga on one trip.

    I am still tempted tho.
The salesman took a long phone call and left me to browse through the receipts. The brake drums were replaced, and it had a 4 bolt steering column although I am not sure there was a receipt for this, or it was standard. He was a very straightforward bloke for a car salesman and told me he thought the steering wandered a bit. I saw dockets for steering tie rods, so it could be the box.THere was also a $1600 receipt for a transfer box bearing job.
What killed it for me was the noise, and the fact I am too much a petrolhead, I dont think I would ever be content with it.
