The bits in the back of mine are in a box....in the cage which is over the back tray.
I know some people who were badly injured in a roll over in a troopy (5 times over sideways). The bad injuries, front pasanger,(Intensive Care Unit for a long period) came from some large heavy items that were not secured in the back of the vehicle.
(vehicle was a stat write-off not a salvageable part on it)
I'm not a fan of a high lift jack .. but if I was to carry one on a Defender I would mount it like the guys below. Simple bracket system to make up and could be placed in a bag so no problem with dust ingress:

i have a mount on my arb roof rack, not sure who make it , but is def a production item, it screws in thru the eyes on the bar and the handle slots into a hole, aslo has provision for a shovel.
While im not a fan of the kanga jack, i have used one more than once to get out of a tight spot, really good for heavily rutted tracks where you get hung up, you just jack up to the full length or close too, and push the bugger over, the wheels move to the sides of the track, do it front and back, and hey presto, your outta there!
not for the faint hearted but:o

Makes it a little easier to access, though it would eat more dust and mud
When I lived in the outback, it was bolted to the top of the bullbar on the SIII, 2 bolts welded on, wing nuts to clamp it with shocker rubbers to stop vibration. - The bolts got ground off as soon as I moved to Melb.
In the Range Rover is sits across the back (inside the car), just in front of the tail gate, and wedged there as the last thing to be packed, so it doesn't move until the tailgates opened.
The Defender came with the ARB slots that bolt to the roof rack. I hardly carry the high lift, so they'll do for now. I've thought about putting them across the back of the rack rather than the side so the jack doesn't catch branches. I've got a longer, heavier handle for mine (doubles as a trifor handle / breaker bar ...), and the jack's a bit taller than some of the imitation highlifts, but it isn't the super tall one. I've thought the Kaymar jack holder would be a better option, but now that I don't have pioneer tool brackets on the front guards, I'm wondering whether to put an axe & shovel bracket there instead - they get used a lot more than the high lift.
The Kaymar wheel holder swings to the right, and there's a ladder on the left on the back of the Defender. I suppose another option would be to make a bracket that clamps to the ladder.
- I'll keep thinking about it. So far I like the idea of pulling it apart.
Another favourite option of mine is to invite someone with a ute along and put it in the back of the ute ;)
