You're right in one way Baz.
But time (or lack thereof) can be a buggerr.
Thinking of doing the same next July... freight it to Cairns, fly the mob to same and drive back over about two weeks.
(Also reduces the 'are we there yet' factor).

Just bite the bullet and bloody drive there for christ sake![]()

That's what the car for after all, if cost is the thing than shorten the trip a bit, cause from what i've seen with the price differance it not much in the sceem of things.
Besides it sounds better when telling everyone about your trip, it's all about the journey not the destination![]()
That's what i reckon anyway![]()

The biggest problem is the 2 youngest kids (1yo and 3yo) we basically end up stopping every hour.
We would be lucky to do Melb-Bris in 5 days if driving
What about "freighting" the kids up and driving yourselves.Originally Posted by grumpybastard

I'm with you here, grumpyb.
When we did Bris to Melb, the Disco was sent a week in advance and was at the hotel before we flew to Melb. Excellent!
Our air trip was lotsa fun for my mob and only took an easy afternoon. The next day our 'serious trip' started and it was a blast!
Freight it one way and plan an easy (long) drive home. There's plenty of accom at the right price.
Good luck!

BTW: I've flown kids from when they were 3 months old and the airlines were (then) excellent with youngies. On one flight with Ansett (how I miss them soooo much), we were moved into first class (our family of five and another family of same), because it was empty. I think tho' being a GoldWing member may have helped a bit. And we all got first class service, wow!
I know of a few families that drove from Vic to FNQ then trucked the vehicle home. Most problems I have heard about have been unreliable dates of arrival for the vehicle, one was 3 weeks late. That is Ok if you have a 2nd vehicle. Also one particular family on the last few days of the trip had nothing but rain and did not have a chance to dry out any of the camping equipment before being put onto the transporter, and the vehicle was a week late arriving home. Not a pretty site, I think thay ended up throwing out most of the camping gear and clothes. My 2C.
I freighted the Disco, Bris Melb thru TNT. They guaranteed a delivery date, but the Disco had to go empty, but that was not a problem for us.
I researched the subject heavily and could've had it sent with a private operator and had it full of our stuff, but the cost was more than double.
Travel light and stay in motels - bargain!
