Somewere in this lot is the truth....
But that in its self is different for all...
Having owned or driven Series LWB and SWB, Disco 1, Rangies and Defenders off road I think any can be a weapon if set up well, and DRIVEN well. But to the original ?....
Standard form... a Defender has the edge... overall IMHO.
But if you want to put a bit of effort into set up on a D1, it will go places a standard Defender cant.
So if you fit all the bells and whistles to both.. a tricked up Defender will have the edge over a tricked up D1... offroad.... IMHO. It depends on how far you want to empty your wallet.
Simply look at the original design concept to decide on what suits...a Defender has compromised comfort / road manners / noise levels / crash safety, for off road ability / load carying, and vice versa for the D1...
I used to live on a farm in the SW of WA, now I live in the city and go 4WD on the weekends and do one or two big trips a year... my D1 takes me to work through stopstart traffic when its too cold/hot to ride my bike, in comfort, hot or cold, able to hear my stereo and talk to my pax... things I didnt care a hoot about when I was going to cut half a tonne of firewood, and throw it, and two oily chainsaws, an axe, a leaky chain oil container, a dog or two etc,in the back of the car.
Despite what some of the one eyed opinions might have you believe ( most very toungue in cheek I suspect ...) the reality is both vehicles will probably be more than capable off road with a little set up... its more likely what you require from your Landy on the mundane days between, that will become important over time.
Take it easy....

Loved it and would love a defender however that was Td5 with traction control compared to Tdi without, Lurch was brilliant.
I think i need to lay down now, either that or a cup of tea and a cuddle.
I'm just gunna have to get a Defender as well i think, 90 black with all the fruit( i wish).
