Thread: Defender v's Discovery

So with the comments provided allready can we assume that a diesel, Automatic Disco 1 with properly distributed weighting and a power upgrade would be the ideal Land Rover?

I've owned both and it's just trade-off in most departments.

My D1 has an easier access for loading than my Defender did. The gearing on my Defender was lower than the Disco (has to cope with bigger wheels). Approach, departure and ramp-over better on the Defender but that has never really been an issue - I've taken my Disco through much heavier off-road stuff than I ever took the Defender and it performed beautifully (much to the disgust of nearby Japeroo owners). The Defender has a 6" chassis cross section where the Disco is only 4", but just try to break either of them.

I went back to the Disco for an easier, quieter drive with the same feeling of fun off-road. But if I was buying a new one it'd be a Defender (the new Disco is just too pretty - doesn't give me confidence in its ability).

A dent in a Defender and you're 'using it'.

A dent in a Disco and 'deary me! you're not looking after it'.

Kidding? Defenders are the only vehicle that I know of that come from the factory dented.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall the first time the new extreme dents a panel,,,

daresay the words would be identical to the new disco owner in the same situation,,,

I own a Rangie but from my perspective here goes-

Defender- A 'real' Land Rover, dents are trophys and I do like the no-bull**** interior (garden hose cleanout bar the later ones with poofy cloth seats).

Disco- Comfort, all-round capability, sound deadning and bloody good air con. Plus they have them in a V* and auto 'box

Pity the Defender wasn't a V8 auto like the NAS 90, it would be the perfect off-roader then. Lots of balls, no gear changing and still a 'real' Land Rover.
