Tell us what you want to know, ask questions and ye shall find answers.
To start the ball rolling, the first land rover was released in 1948. It was released to meet the demand of people who wanted a farm work horse that could go to town on sundays. It was fairly agricultural in construction, and was made from metals left over from the war and paint left over from fighter planes was used to paint them.
The first land rover was termed the series I, here is a photo. The next installment of the story will be the series II.

Your definition of best may vary but
The IIa was best.... simple, reliable, built in beer opener and bbq grill

After WW2, the Rover company (first manufacturers of the modern bicycle, but making cars since the beginning of the 20th century) faced a crisis. Although they had done well making aeroplanes and jet engines through the war, resuming making cars had problems. The biggest one was that there was a shortage of sheet steel and it was rationed according to how many cars you exported from the UK - and traditionally Rover had not exportedcars, and the ones it knew how to make were not the type that would sell well in the USA, which was the prime export market.
They came up with the idea of copying the Willys jeep, but more civilianised. The jeep, which was produced in large numbers through the war (by Willys and Ford) was a sort of descendant of the 1920s Austin 7 designed by the US importer of these, Bantam. Consequently the first Landrover was pretty much a straight copy of the jeep, but using as many existing Rover parts as possible (e.g. engine, gearbox major axle components), and modifications for civilian purposes such as doors, a tailgate, 12v electrics, centre, rear and front power takeoffs, and most steel body parts were galvanised for rust protection. It had the body largely made from aluminium, as there was no shortage of this - UK industry had been all set up for the war to keep going and there were large orders of aeroplanes cancelled with the cessation of hostilities. Since it was intended only to be a stopgap, the first Landrovers were made with an absolute minimum of tooling, hence the bolt together construction, simple shape, and unique chassis design.
As it turned out, following its release at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948, the demand vastly exceeded any expectations, and it was to be almost thirty years before production capacity matched demand (since Rover was a small company, expanding capacity was not simple). As it became obvious that it would continue in long term production, numerous changes were made. One of these changes, and by no means the biggest one, was in 1958, with the introduction of a new petrol engine and some restyling. The new version was dubbed the Series 2, and all previous versions were retrospectively dubbed Series 1, although during production they were simply Landrovers.
Hope this helps, carry on with Series 2, Ace.
