    Landrover Defender info

Have been offered a White 2001 Defender wagon { 300 TDI...I think?} it has the 4 cyl motor . bloke claims it was the one before the BMW donk. Has bull bar towbar roof rack and is a 10 seater. 125 000 km one owner show. He was offered 8000 as a trade and declined. he wants $ 25k for it , is that a fair price if not what would be resonable? Ive been told the 4 cyl is **** with all the guts of a victa mower and not to bother unless you can get the 5 cyl is that a common opinion? thanks for any help you can shed

A 2001 should have the TD5 in it. I'm pretty sure the TDi went in about 99. I tend to think the TD5 is significantly better than the 300Tdi.

    What BMW donk?
Common misconception that. TD5 was developed before BMW took over I believe. What Slunnie said, 1999 or 2000 was first of TD5.

Otherwise 300TDI was a good motor I'm told, without any electronics. Although I'm happy with my 2006.

Funny, all 4 cylinder diesel defenders finished in OZ in 1998. Td5 was 1999 onwards, unless it is a privalely imported 300Tdi from the UK, as LR still build them to order as ROW (rest of world,) spec to aid organisations and the UN etc for use in remote areas and poor fuel countries. I looked into buying 1 for a customer, but the 300 Tdi isn't allowed to be sold new here anymore according to ADR's that govern emissions etc. Added to the cost of importing etc, it is cheaper for him to buy a Td5 and swap back to the Tdi!! ( He wants a non ECU equipped Defender, and there aren't too many low KM good 300 Tdi 13o's left.)

"the 4 cyl is ****" - No it is not.
"all the guts of a victa mower" - It won't do burnouts at the lights if that's what you're after.
"is that a common opinion?" - Don't know, but its not mine. From what I've read on this forum there are heaps of 300Tdi Defender owners who are quite happy with their vehicles.

If it's a standard 110 wagon Red Book says $17,000 to $20,000 depending.

What Dave said. The Tdi may not be as smooth and torquey as the Td5, but its simple, easily and relatively cheap to repair, and uses very little fuel. I would pick a Tdi over a Td5.
Or a 4BD1T over either of those.....

Not strictly true, I have only recently bought a 1999 300Tdi Defender. OK the VIN number puts it as a 1998 build but the compliance plate is actually dated 1999 as this was when it must have landed in Australia and is when it was first registered.

So there are some (well at least one) 1999 300 Tdi's around, depending on whether you date them based on build date or compliance plate date.

If it's a 300tdi It'd have to be good and modded up for 25k

    Even a TD5 it's a lot of money nowadays for a 7yr old car

There was a court case in Qld. in the 1970's where a group of Jeep buyers sued the dealer, Annand & Thompson. The Jeeps had been in stock for a year or two and were sold as new vehicles. The owners gripe was that they bought, say, cars made in 1971, in 1973 as new vehicles, and that they faced losses not of their causing by reason of depreciation because the trade regarded and valued the vehicles as 1971 models. What came out in court was that the trade regarded vehicles as "new" until first sold at retail, but, once sold, were treated by the year model. I don't recall what eventually was the result. There was much argument about whether the dealer practised deception in not telling the customers that the "new" vehicles were 2 years old, even though regarded as new by reason of no prior retail sale.

The 300TDi is an awsome engine, it certainly aint no V8, but i dont have a problem with the power and i live in lithgow where there isnt a shortage of hills. Most hills it pulls up at 90 or above, many it will happily sit on 100 plus in 5th. The power can be improved with an injector pump mod, larger intercooler and aftermarket large diameter exhaust. Off road its brilliant, in low first the only thing limiting it up hills is grip, if it has grip it will climb it. It will tow 3-4t happily.

But the one you have described as the others have said would have the TD5 2.5L 5chy turbo diesel. These came in in 99. 25k sounds like a reasonable price for those low Km's, but cant really say without having seen it, do you have any pictures? Matt
