I have surge protectors fitted on most of my outlets, the one for the sound system was the most expensive one had to buy it when I moved here six weeks ago the voltages drop down to 196 volts and go as high as 265 volts this voltage inverter keeps the voltage at 140 volts they also cover anything that is plugged into it up to $50,000.

Surge protectors will keep most of the stuff coming down the phone lines and the electicity lines at bay, a UPS is even better but if you get a direct strike on the building it's luck of the draw in my experience - even if you unplug everything!

sometimes you dont need a strike.

years ago i had a dozen or so new modems out of their boxes and on my desk ready to upgrade some of my BBS modem bank.

lightning went thru the sky above my house, the modems made a noise like the noise sugar makes when you walk on it... and all the modems had died and gone to heaven.

    cost me near on $6k

lucky i had specified insurance on the BBS gear including the modem bank....

took some arguing tho i have to say.

What is a good quality one. From where would I procure one? All this surge talk has made me nervous...

more than happy to sell you a 10amp, 36,000 amp surge, 6 outlets, twin line or lan protection, with 10 year replacement warranty on the unit for $93.00 plus about $12.00 post and pack to alice.

there are bigger and better ones but the price becomes a little prohibitive.

Last summer we had a band of thunderstorms went through here - and my modem died. Next day I went into town and eventually found a replacement - but I had to go to three shops before I found one that had any modems left in stock after the rush the previous day!
