If you look closely Edd they have two bars horizontally mounted on the bonnet, it looks like the wheel is secured onto these bars

Arhe Land probably be in June July when talking to them yesterday about their travel plans

the two grey round bars across the front have nothing to do wiht the spare they are bars Robert tied on to act as a roo bar and they are filled with bamboo

February they were planning to be in tasmania wiht friends coming from europe to do osme travelling with them thye are unsure of specific dates so prehaps you could inform them on kookynet what the Vic 4wd show dates are.

I'll be happy to provide as much servicing and parts support for them while in Tasmania, and possibly some interesting drives etc, if you could pass it on. Thanks, JC.

    Hello Justin
Martine reads the posts on this site often so I am sure she will see your offer and take you up on it.
Have just come back from dinner with them and said my goodbyes...such a lovely lovely couple. I hope you can all meet them and get the stories that they have and the places they have seen. It will keep u amused for hrs.
They were a pleasure to have here in Perth.
Sad they are going but I will keep in touch!!!

What are they planning when they get to sydney area? We might have to plan an Ace's BBQ for them so they can meet everyone and see the area, some nice views around here. Matt

I don't own a defender so what I know is from reading hear and looking at others vehicles, aren't the main issues for bonnet mounted spare wheels, the clearance in the engine bay and the lack of re-enforcement in the bonnet structure?

These two bars look like they form a type of exo skeleton for the bonnet therefore giving it enough structural integrity to hold the spare wheel without causing issues with bent bonnets and clearance in the engine bay, it wouldn't help the drivers vision though, but a bonnet mounted spare never would anyway.

This is the way I see it.

You are correct. On the TD5 the removed the reinforcing due to clearance. Supposedly if you put a spare on those bonnets it will collapse onto the engine.
