Any positive feedback on newer Range Rovers?

I'm thinking of getting myself something with a bit of luxury, and have taken a look at some 2nd hand Diesel Range Rovers from 2002/2003 (the current body shape).

I'd love one of the new V8 diesels, but don't have enough money for a new one.

Fantastic cars, but I discovered horrible tales of woe here:
    http://www.rangerovers.net/rrmkiiiremedies.html

I will still keep the 130 Defender for trips and my D1 for mundane stuff like taking children to school etc, so the RR wouldn't get flogged off road.

Anyone here have good things to say about this model?

    Thanks
    David

There haven't been too many serious issues that I know of.
Most of the trim seems a poorer quality than earlier Range Rovers. The colour peels from various pieces & some bits can crack easily.

There's the odd headlight that needs replacement & they're not exactly cheap.

Mechanically, the diesel has been very good. Lately we've replaced a couple of fuel pumps but I feel that's a fuel quality problem more than anything.
There's quite a few front diffs & prop shafts been replaced due to misalignment/lack of lubrication.
The electric steering columns have also been an issue but most appear to have been sorted out now.

I'd be tempted to buy one, possibly in another few years when they come down to $5000 .

Thanks for the quick reply. Makes me feel like it might be worth exploring further instead of writing it off as a bad idea.

$5000 will be some way off! They seem to be around $60,000 at the moment.

The thread (from my initial post) has got pages and pages of problems and made a lot of mention of Diff/Prop issues. Scary reading if you are thinking of buying one.

There was a Bulletin out regarding the alignment of these. I would think that they would all have been sorted by now.

Hi Spudboy, drop drivesafe a PM he owns one and is happy with it.

You need to remember that some of the things on that list may only be there because one person has had a problem and listed it. You definitelty dont hear the horror stories on reliability that surrounded the p38a. Matt

There's a new bulletin on this every couple of months !!
I hate to think what version they're up to now.

We occasionally have cars that had the early bulletins followed get another diff & shaft done.

Ahh, but i didnt say i believed them, if we believed all the Land Rover horror stories we wouldnt own them, gotta remember that most of them came from a mate of a mate. So either there arent any horror stories to tell of the RRIII or the owners dont have mates that drive cruisers and patrols to tell and have it blown out or proportion. Matt

I suspect that you might see more of these through your workshop than we do... We sold two new, one of which is still in town. The other one was recently traded in Adelaide for a newie (still TD6), but we have only serviced it once. We haven't had a lot of trouble with them, just niggling faults (how does the ABS ECU control interior light and radio operation?!).

I don't know the ins & outs but is it possible that the radio volume is speed related (higher volume at higher speed) ?
The wheel speed sensors would supply the road speed signal in that case.

Not too sure how the interior lights are linked. Maybe they turn off once the vehicle starts moving unlike our 87/88 RR's when they turn off with the ignition.
