I just finished reading the review in LROI, i must say i am impressed, the transit engine doesnt seem to be to bad, LROI are impressed, has the same horsepower as the TD5 but has nearly 50nm mor torque. It is only coming with a 6 speed manual according to LROI and diesel is the only engine. I really like the 90, it has 4 really nice looking bucket seats, would suit a family of three to a tee, rip the 4th seat out for luggage space and way you go. I hate land rover, so many nice vehicles and not enough money to own all of them. I really like the D3 but the new fender looks good.

LROI also said that this is the las defender, the way the article sounded it was going to be deleted permanently in 2010. Matt

The last incarnation of the current vehicle.

There will hopefully be a utility type vehicle based on the D3 platform in 2010, may not be called Defender though, sort of lost its military ties.

A few years ago the Defender was going to disappear by now. There is still the possibility its production may be moved to somewhere like China.

It is quite possible that there may not be a replacement, or if there is it will be a restyled Ford (see Jaguar). Landrover have largely lost their utility market, certainly in this country, and probably almost everywhere except perhaps the UK. Designing a new replacement from scratch or even using the D3 platform (perhaps to the extent that the 110 used the Rangerover platform) with a largely Defender body on it would still be a pretty expensive exercise, and it would have to be more than the niche vehicle it is now. To be successful Ford would have to tackle Toyota head on, worldwide, and even then I doubt the market is big enough to justify it, particularly if they are turning their bacl on military sales as seems to be the case.

I'm afraid that I see the most likely Defender replacement being a downmarket D3, slightly restyled, with possibly only a wagon available.

It would be a shame to loose the fender, even though land rover is now targetting the luxury market it wouldnt be hard to keep some form of low cost utility type vehicle to keep their hand in all markets. Matt

Yep I reckon as said above by 2010 they will dump the new fender all together. They just don't sell enough of them any more.

I read in the US they are selling RRS as quick as they can get them into the country. That's where the money is for Land Rover now.

So the resale value after 2010 will be good then .

A bit like how 110 Countys in Australia cost more 10 years down the track than when they were new. Or how Series Land Rover prices have gone in the USA.

Once they're out of production and their patents expire, I'm sure some enterprising Chinese business man will set up his factory to pump them out. It will probably be an online thing :

Enter your country - this option selects applicable ADRs or similar so that tyres, seatbelts, lights etc comply with the market the vehicle is being exported to.

    Select
    • wheelbase
    • body type
    • seats (number & style)
    • colour
    • wheels & tyres
    • engine
    • transmission (manual / auto) sub categories
    • accessories
    • shipping mode
    • enter credit card details for deposit
The factory starts building your car, 2 days later you get an email with pics of your new Land Rover. Complete transaction via EFT, Credit Card or Online Easy Finance.
