No I'm not selling the Defender, not as long as it behaves itself.![]()
I was thinking of buying a daily driver so I can slow down the rate at which I'm putting km on the Defender, so it will last longer! A wagon or ute would be ideal, something that can tow a horse float. Also would like something I can do the basic servicing on myself. So I was thinking Falcon wagon or ute, Commode wagon, older Holden ute perhaps. Anyone have any strong opinions (backed up by experience) on which would be better and why? Auto would be preferred, though my old man reckons you can't back heavy loads uphill with them due to the torque converter unlocking or something?
Oh and about $4k max.![]()

Ford Falcon EL sedan, wouldn't be too hard to find a goodie for $4000.
eg: my neighbour across the street (82 yo ex farmer) traded his late 95 EF wagon with 65,000 ks on it a year ago, the dealer gave him $3500 as a trade (on a new BA sedan) and it was better than perfect, if i'd known I would have paid him more....
Have had many and all have been fine (and have an AU right now which is sweet, the missus loves it).

If you want it for towing, check the towing capacity of manual vs auto utes. Someone told me that manual utes have a MUCH LOWER towing capacity.
Personally I prefer manuals (but see above). Holden 6s are more economical than falcon 6s, but other than that both are much of a muchness IMO. What about a diesel 2x4 hilux or courier ute?
You know old discos are now really cheap and have a huge towing capacity...

It was an absolute dog box on either fuel as soon as you hooked the horse float up to it.
You need a diesel, and the weight and height of a 4wd makes it a lot easier to tow horses around with.
Even seen what happens to a commode or Falcon once the horses decide to pay up in the back of the float at highway speeds?
They just don't have the power or weight in them to counteract the drag of the float + horses + tack.
I would even think 4x4 Hilux Diesel.
When you are towing horses especially it is very easy to get your car bogged. You'll be in fields unloading/loading them and once you have a float on the back of a commodore/falcon its basically on the ground. I used to go to plenty of horsey events [sister was a horse person] and the amount of people that would get their cars bogged was unbelievable... I learnt that anything over 5 degrees of grass and you're 2WD wont move![]()

Thanks guys. The towing thing is really just for those occasions when there is a usage conflict, ie I want to play in the Defender and my wife wants to take the horse somewhere. We already have a 4wd to tow with, what I want is something simple, and cheap/easy to fix if it goes wrong, that can be used for occasional towing.
I doubt I could buy any 4wd for less than $4k which doesn't need bulk money spending on it.
(The place my wife usually rides has good all weather access so getting bogged wouldn't be an issue)
