You know you coule pick up a series LR in really good condition for about 3k...
The float would be about 1500kg loaded (only one horse).

No thanks, I want something that would be half comfortable as a daily driver.

Are you sure of the weight?

Or is it one of them single floats?

Yeah I'm sure, there's not much to them. It's a double but with only one horse it would be well under 2t.

From OL - tow capacities of ford utes:

V8 auto AU/BA models are 2300kg. They do it easy. Manual models are rated lower. 1600kg from memory.

I have seen a p1ssed of thoroughbred kick the tail gate of a horse float thus moving the brand new ute (manual with handbrake on) backwards by a metre.

Tell me this would happen in a 4wd?

For the money I don't think you could go past a EF/EL Falcon Wagon,
As long as It has a good service history and doesn't overheat.

I've got a sedan and am Very happy with it, better on fuel than the 97' commodore which I drove for a fair while and more comfortable. Apparently they tow better than commodores aswell (more torque)
Had 130k, full history only cost 5 grand

If you are not partial the Falcons are generally a lot cheaper for a later model than a Commodore. I prefer the Commodore off hand. We are looking for a Commodore or a Statesaman at the moment.

Ok, i would tend to agree with the EL/EF wagon recommendation, the falcon 6's with the auto will tow quite happily, more easily than the commodore V6 IMO. You will get more falcon for your money than you will a commodore. The commodore 6 is better for cruising, better around town, more responsive being the V6 configuration and better on fuel aswell.

My overall recommendation, get an EL/EF wagon and get it put on dual fuel, will be cheap to run and will town the horse float easily. Matt

The trade pays more for Commodores than for Falcons. Does this tell you something? Whatever we think of used car dealers and salesmen, they are pretty good judges of of a dog model or a dud make. I am driving a LR County-Isuzu because I am totally fed up with my late model Falcon ute. Repeated electronic failures, (2) main power relays, (2) electronic ignition modules, (1) Hall effect transducer, (2) ignition coils, (1) Vehicle management computer, (1) distributor cap, (2) sets ignition leads in 80000k's.
head gasket leaking water out the exhaust side at 130000k's. Told by machine shop I was lucky as no sign of traditional Ford design fault, ignored by Ford, corrosion in head between 5 & 6. New head is about $4000 in total. Told by machine shop that gasket leak occurs between 80000 and 150000. Cause is Ford use cheap s--t gaskets. The electronic failures, by the way, disable the car, and you require the services of a tow truck to get the car somewhere it can be diagnosed and repaired.

Go back to the future, get a car with carburettor and points, or a mechanical injection diesel, to get reliability and repairability.

In either case, Commodore or Falcon, you need to fit an additional or larger trans. oil radiator and a trans. oil filter, plus an engine oil cooler for heavy towing.
