survey on 4wd clubs

1 - Brisbane Four Wheel Drive Club Inc.
2 - That sounds like waaaaaaaaaay too much hard work. Why not just pick one of the many existing ones. If you want to change it a little then join the committee.
3 - I would not join a particular club if I didn't like the people or what they did. However as I said above I would just move on to the next one if it was a bad club and didn't want to try and change it.
4 - Being around like minded people.
5 - Mixed. It is good to see how the different vehicles handle different terrain. Plus you don't need to leave the club if you change the make of vehicle you drive. Our club has a lot of Cruisers and Patrols but we have about 5 Discos and 1 Rangie in the club now. The member list mentions a Series and a Defender too but I have never seen them. Being in a one make club would be good for getting a lot of make specific info but that is what I use AULRO for.

Nah been there done that :D This is the club i started in the Uk The Shire Land Rover Club http://www.shirelrc.com/index.asp Still going and the biggest club on the South coast in the UK.
So now i want to join in the events and fun of the club instead of worring and organiseing everything,

mmmm should not care a rats but take each club as i see it. But i have Only ever really been in a Land Rover Club so not much of an expert:)

3 - why would you not join a club? If other members decide to cater for their own needs and not the needs of others (who they think are inferior because they don't drive the same car)
4 - what would you want from a club? Variety, advice, possible discounts on merchandise and accessories, monthly magazines, social events and driving competitions that cater for all vehicle and driver levels

3 - why would you not join a club? Mixed 4WD clubs, been in one a few years and left a very sour taste in my mouth. They were anti-social and constant barrage of anti-LR crap even if you follow them in your near stock Rangie and climb the same hills they do in there 33' tyred Hilux/Pootrol/'Cruiser. Plus too many egotistical ******* who are so far up themselves that can't be botherd talking to you.
4 - what would you want from a club? Value for money and good comradire. The main reason I like LR based clubs is technical knowledge and always someone there who might have the odd spart part for your old dunga :) . Clubs that do the sort of 4WD trips I like to do as well. I prefer hardcore 4WDing more than 'chardonay' ****** trips as my Rangie is more set-up for that and I din't spend big $$$ not to use the gear. Plus I'm single so the family thing isn't an isue for me.
5 - if you joined a club, would you prefer it to be all landrover, mixed or don't give a rat's? All LR although the occasional Pootrol/Cruiser/ Pajero, etc....isn't a worry (need something to laugh at :D ). I all honesty, if they have the same idea and interests in 4WDing as I do it's all good. LR based clubs also keep out the overbearing, ego-driven Hilux yobbo types and the know-it-all experts who have done better, sen better and are better in there own tiny-minded brains :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: (the sorts of :censored: I absolutlet despise).

In conclusion, you know what club is for you when you have a confortable 'feel' for the people, the style of trips and activities they conduct and the enviroment. I have been to many club meetings and felt off-put in 5 minutes and others (like the Brisbane LROC) that I felt right at home. Also do a trip and get to know what they're like and see for yourself. It's hard to get an idea from one meeting sometimes.

Did it once... Was time consuming... Did i to form a 4wd association recognised club for our offroading group, wouldnt bother doing it again...

(a) If it was full of D1ckheads
(b) I was in a more 'sole touring' frame of mind
(c) Club had a poor safety record
(d) Club had a poor trip frequency / events calendar
(e) Was full of biggoted Jap 4wd owners who cant see beyond their own impotence (not a TYPO)

Fun, committed, energetic club with a mix of touring, weekenders, day trips and fun events...
With both a single (mens/womens only trips) and a family base too.
Members with excellent humour, and not for the club to be solely "Jap lovers" - Stirring is fun afterall, especially as the Landie often outdrives the Jap offerrings

Mixed is great fun... Lots of jest.. As long as its jest...

Landy only groups are also great, and have an awesome vibe...

But only the TRUE = Landy only clubs.

2 Maybe. There arn't any local that I know of.
3 Like the others if I didn't like then and didn't feel like I belonged then why stay.
4 Driver training and the ability to get out with others. Made a deal when I bought my 4wd that I wouldn't go out alone so I need others to travel with.
5 It would be good to have the knowledge base and contacts for help. Don't mide other vehicles as it helps give you ideas. Just not interested in the anti Landy movement.

I almost joined the ACT Land Rover club but was put off by the size and some of the rules.

Baz the club I'm with do take trailers out on weekend trips and they have even taken normal box trailers off road.

No - a lot of work - and some of my motivation was to learn from others with more experience than me.... so seems silly to re invent the wheel.

3 - why would you not join a club?

a) - if it was too focused on one area... ie touring only.. really full on hardcore only.. etc.
b) - lack of safe sensible trip practices
c) - after investigating the club - I was just not comfortable it would fit my needs.
d) - too full of political bitchyness

4 - what would you want from a club?

Trips - a wide variety - and a wide variety of standards - from scenic right through to very hard. Day trips and longer tours or basecamp style trips.(grades need to be published to a standard so peole know what they are getting involved in.)

Friendly people - to learn from - and just to enjoy time in the bush with.... no one likes to camp with someoine you reckon is a Dill - and I definitely don't want a dill helping me if I get stuck miles from nowhere!

Training - from people that actually know what they are doing!

I also was looking for a club where my family would fit in... not just me. My missus is now really enthusiastic about going on club events and trips.;)

Finally somewhere I feel like I can get involved - no point in joining if you're not going to get your hands dirty....

I'm not overly concerned - I like the balance LROCV has - there are none Landrover vehicles - but the majority are landrovers. I feel at least a strong interest in Land Rovers is beneficial - many of the long term rover owners are a good source of knowledge for newbies.

4 - what would you want from a club? Lots of information, ability to "network" about vehicles and information. A good range of vehicles and levels of experience in the club to provide a sound knowledge base.

thnaks for your comments guys, all this has been really helpful.
it just goes to show that not everyone wants the same thing.
it all pretty-well boils down to variety and less ******* on an official level.
in the LROC, we are mindful of the effect that bogging down a general meeting with arguments over bylws and points of order really puts people off and lately we've been trying to defer any such talk to the committee meetings.
there also has been talk of trips for camper trailers, dog friendly trips (for extended families) and driver training that includes trailer skills. new ideas coming all of the time. 2007 will see another run of the "GPS for dummies" training day.
