Land Rover Special Vehicles (when they existed) were very good at making bespoke Defenders. That "made to order" market is too delicate an enterprise for a motoring conglomorate (FORD), but is still a viable business.

Once they're out of production and their patents expire, I'm sure some enterprising Chinese business man will set up his factory to pump them out. It will probably be an online thing :

Enter your country - this option selects applicable ADRs or similar so that tyres, seatbelts, lights etc comply with the market the vehicle is being exported to.

    Select
    • wheelbase
    • body type
    • seats (number & style)
    • colour
    • wheels & tyres
    • engine
    • transmission (manual / auto) sub categories
    • accessories
    • shipping mode
    • enter credit card details for deposit
The factory starts building your car, 2 days later you get an email with pics of your new Land Rover. Complete transaction via EFT, Credit Card or Online Easy Finance.
It's already happening, with the Santana Land Rover

That was really good John and points irony, which seems to be so typically British. The irony here is that while the 'fender is now very retro (jonesy we must have been thinking the same thoughts), it is to be reintroduced as a 'modern' vehicle. Yet retro designs are back in a big way, Ford GT40 and Mustang, Camaro and as jonsey noted, the mini and the VW beetle, Chrysler Prowler and PT and there's even a few 'pickups' which are so retro. (Frankly Ford have done little with the F100 type design since the late sixties or early seventies).

I'd like a Moke as a round around, given it rarely rains these days.

Even the bloody hummer (1) is only an oversized GP jeep.

I'm waiting for GM to work out how to return the 59 Caddy, complete with metre high tailfins, (and an underdash record player). All right I'll settle for an 8 track. LOL

    Again, thanks John!

Santana has been around for about as long as LR.
They were originally Land Rover - Santanas. They had an agreement to build LR's, in CKD, then they manufactured them later. The agreement eventually went down the gurgler.
They now manufacture them, they are a good car, and a cheaper version.
Less Mod cons and sit on leaf not coils I believe.
There is even a Santana UK, and they sell a fair few there.
They have some large mil. contracts in Spain, Portugal and roundabout.
Let's see if we can get them ADR'd here!!!

I thought the post was long enough as it was! And I also left out Starley and Sutton - it was not meant to be a history, except to the extent meeded to explain the heritage and origin of the current Landrovers.

    John

PS - that is Spen as in Spencer, not Sven. And having just checked this in Robson, I also note that in the export figures he gives for Landrover, (only from 1964 to 1974) Australia was either top of the list or second (68-72). But the highest figure was 1969 (5,005) and by 1974 it was down to 2,400, still at the top of the list.

And whats wrong with leaf springs?

I've got em on my box trailer.

They're a perfect match for drum brakes 'n' friction type shock absorbers.

Spose you'll want power steering 'n' leccy windows, too....LOL

OK bit off topis but a bit on

Sorry to say but its the truth

Australia market (in my mind ) does not mean much to Land Rover. Its not a big enough market for them to chase after. There is just not enough people living here to warrent the hassle.
After all the sell more defednders in the Uk in a week than they do in Aus a year. Also the freelander sells twice it nearest competion, the disco does the same. But in the Uk bacause of this they have more dealerships. I had 7 large dealerships within 50k's of my house in the UK
Land rovers main target is Europe and USA. Where most if not all disco's ,Rangies and freelanders never see mud on there tyres. So why build a truck to do the outback when 2% (if you are lucky) will ever see it. But have people in USA and Europe moan about the mods so that it can

reminds me of a case in the carpet industry a couple of years ago. Scotgaurd found that their product included a cemical that was not biodegradeable. So they took it off the market . The owner of Scotguard 3m said that even though it was a multi millon part of their business it was only 2% of their total business, so they would not be renewing it and would stay off the market. Basically they could not be a*sed for the 2%. They did in the end bring it back after some one stubbled on a chemical and because of the unroar the public made

You will never get land rover to do anything for the Aus market. Just because it is not big enough. Manly because all companys like this are now run by accounts and not peoople who are look for whats the best thing for someone. They just look at what makes the most money````
