Advantages it's CO2 it would not harm or discolour the hull in any way, readilly available especially if the local fire dept are renewing the gasses.

Disadvantages: You'd probably need two people to do this properly, and you'd only get a few shots of CO2 out of the extinguisher
    You won't see it.

The only reason you can see CO2 when its fired, is condensation in the air from the cold CO2, but that soon dissipates.

There is the obvious one. Put said boat in the water and just keep checking it as the water slowly floods it. One bit of advice is wear a life jacket!

Setting a smoke bomb of inside the hull sounds the best idea followed by the smoke machine.

Companies that service fire alarm systems have canned smoke to test smoke detectors. Comes in an aerosol can about the size of your average fly spray can.

A couple of those should do it.

the canned smoke that i have seen isnt colourse it only contains the part of the smoke that sets the alarms off its a clear gas.

I did a course with the fire bragades in nsw last week - to fill their burning building they produce smoke - somehow from massage oil and nitrogen, they says its non toxic - im sure if you googled it you would find it - it wasa dense smoke so much so that you couldnt see your hand in front of your body at arms length.

Max were theres smoke theres fire mate stay away from that idea ....

Mate if you can pump compressed air into the void and can keep it flowing so air comes out the holes arm your self with a spray bottle with water and wasing detergent in it spray on area were you need to find leaks and watch for bubbles as this will show your leak nice and safely ....

this is how ive tested many tanks for leaks over the years in the trade and works a treat good luck mate ....

    cheers

the simplest and easiest way to find the leaks is to put the bungs in.....

then fill the thing with water........

After a couple of seconds the ping pong ball will transform into a cloud of thick white acrid smoke (it will burn the back of your throat - I don't know how toxic it is) You will be amazed at how much smoke comes from one ping pong ball only.

20 seconds later the foil will be follow.

The smoking ping pongs balls featured in an old B&W WWII POW Escape Movie.

Brings back memories Michael. We used to make smoke bombs at boarding school by cutting up ping pong balls into small chips then placing them into foil from a cigarette packet folded into a cube with a hole punched in the top. Wave a flame under the cube until it starts smoking and then throw it where you like (under the dunny door when someone's having a crap works a treat). You can make a wicked bomb by using more than one ping pong ball. Nearly got expelled from Bendigo School of Mines for letting one off in an inappropriate location once - bloody security guards ..............
    Cheers .........
