Off topic - How to pump smoke into a 1/2" hole

No 4wd connection I know.. well the Defender does tow it..

I'm looking to pump smoke under pressure into one of the bottom bungs in a boat, to see where all the holes drilled in the floor are. Anyone got any bright ideas?

Got a compressor. Sealing it with rag would be ok. But what could be used as a visible indicator?

The floor in this thing, any boat I guess, is a bit like the cap on a tyre valve.. if water gets past the bungs, and they do seep, the various holes drilled over the years for battery mounts etc holes just let the air out. If it was air tight, very little water would seep in.

    TIA

    Regards
    Max P

Dry ice would produce enough smoke, and can be coloured

Or just get some coloured smoke fireworks from the link below

    http://www.acmefireworks.com.au/indoors.htm

Put the smoke canister (stuff the use to flag down helicopters and stuff) in a box with a 1/2 inch tubing attached then blow the smoke into the hull with your compressor via a basic venturi system or a small remote fan in the box. Green should work a treat

Best part there only $4.00 each

Dry ice doesnt produce smoke it produces something similar to steam as it reverts back to a gas from a solid, and it wouldnt last as long as smoke so you would have to do it quickly.

What about the gear that bee-keepers use, something like that would work and it comes with a pump to pump the smoke in. Matt

You could use a pest control bomb or two, that stuff gets everywhere and as an added bonus you get rid of the roaches and stuff in the shed.

Or you could set a flare off inside the boat, would need some cleaning afterwards but it would work a treat. Matt

    1. Wrap a ping pong ball in alum foil and stand a match upright against it so that you create a funnel as you wrap the foil. Remove the match one it's done.

    2. Poke the funnel into the cavity and apply heat to the foil with a match or a lighter.

After a couple of seconds the ping pong ball will transform into a cloud of thick white acrid smoke (it will burn the back of your throat - I don't know how toxic it is) You will be amazed at how much smoke comes from one ping pong ball only.

20 seconds later the foil will be follow.

The smoking ping pongs balls featured in an old B&W WWII POW Escape Movie.

caterpiller dealers sell smoke bombs,we used to use these to help find leaks in cabs to seal against dust you could use one and a funnel with a small length of hose going to the bung, the smoke does not leave any residue and the fumes should not kill you either,

Good thinking, a CO2 fire extinguisher, cut off the nozzle and the rubber tubing is 3/8 inch diameter you could get some copper line of 1/2 inch diametre into the bung hole then clamp the 3/8 tubing over the top of the copper line.

Advantages it's CO2 it would not harm or discolour the hull in any way, readilly available especially if the local fire dept are renewing the gasses.

Disadvantages: You'd probably need two people to do this properly, and you'd only get a few shots of CO2 out of the extinguisher

Go to a party hire place and hire a smoke machine. Or, go to jaycar/dick smith and buy one. Non-toxic and make smoke all day long.

    Cheers
    Simon
