G'day All, Go with the wife's suggestion, I thought I was the only one in Oz with a wife like that, anyway maybe some-one else has a better suggestion cheers and good luck with it cheers mate Dennis![]()

And if I should, how much should I pay?
There is a rolled Disco Td5 with 17k on the clock being auctioned tomorrow. If I could get it cheap enough it would be an option to cure my cracked head - just replace the entire engine.
I realise that wreckers/LR parts people etc may be bidding but I could be lucky and get it for a reasonable price. Question is - what is a reasonable price. A low mileage motor would presumably be worth, say, $5k-$7k?
What else off the vehicle could I sell?
I have been told that the (auto) gearboxes never give trouble so I wouldn't be able to sell it, with the same going for most of the other mechanicals on such a low mileage vehicle.
Would it be worth transplanting the auto into my Defender?? If the chassis is ok turning it into a hybrid project??? (That was my wife's suggestion!)

I reckon you're right that there will be competition but if the price is right then............ come on down !
As for the auto from a TD5 into a Defender.. is your Defender a TD5 ? If so - yep !
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

The first and most important question!
Is it a repairable write-off or a statutory write off?
A statutory write-off can not be re-registered under any circumstances, so its only use would be for spare parts.
A repairable write-off can be repaired and re-registered. An engineer's report and/or safety certificate will be required and inspection by the appropriate body in your state. You need to keep a diary of all work done, by whom, when, their qualifications, and keep all invoices for parts, goods and services to show when you hand the vehicle over for inspection to have it removed from the register of write-offs.
I have been through this twice now and doubt whether I would buy another repairable write-off because of the bureaucratically induced stress.

Autos never break down... pfaffle, but I wont go into that...
you can still flog the auto just list it at less than the price of a full recon for the same box.
Given that it was probabley running when it rolled, how long did it run for in the wrong position? did the brain shut it down when the impact sensor went off or did it run till something else faulted?
If you did buy it ID be more inclined to either treat the donk to a full inspection or just transplant the head onto your block
Depending on cominality i might be convincable to helping buy the beast for some spares of my own, perhaps others here would be too.

Frenchie if you get it and both the headlights are OK (at least 1 looks Ok in the pics)I will put my hand up before anybody else does.!!!Probably interested in a steering wheel(mines ratty) the clock(mines pretty plucked most of the time)and possibly the ECU(should be the better flashable type)OH IF I HAD A PILE OF $$$$ TO SPEND!!!!!
As for a project,NO DONT GO THERE.As the transport gestapo treat the age of the vehicle on the age of the chassis and the project needs to meet all ADRs for the chassis age.
Goodluck, hopefully all the buyers there think "fitting end for the pommy junk who would buy that"

To turn it into another vehicle means your still short 1 X engine if you scavenge it to fix your other!
I need an auto.I've had some temperature issues with my one due to an unknowingly mud plugged ATF cooler and the chip/intercooler made things worse.
Quite seriously, if the price is agreeable, I am interested in the auto if you're parting.
You could also no doubt sell the transfer a Non-CDL D2 owner, as with the D2upgrade CDL links (which I'm also after), the diffs centres to those that blow them up, the front dhaft to those that have them let go. Alloys sell for $100-$150ea

I'm not sure, but the D2 auto computer speaks to the ECU etc. I'm not sure if the Def loom does this. The 4HP22 may be a better tranny to use as it has not ECU, unlike the D2's 4HP22EH.Originally Posted by VladTepes

If a "project" is classed as an "Individually Constructed Vehicle" then the day it is presented for registration is considered the date of completion, and the ICV needs to comply with all ADR's extant at that date, with the sole exception being that and ADR compliant engine up to 5 years old may be used.Originally Posted by LandyAndy
