    Fires and somewhere safe to camp

    Hi
    Any tips on where I can find a new yrs eve camp site that wont be crowded( ie no other bastard there..or at least not many), that I can drive to in the fairly std disco, that is near a river, that is not at high fire risk and not too far off the beaten track in case of needing to get out quick???? Big ask I know but my usual haunts are either burnt or at risk of same...I am in North east vic but willing to travel for such a spot. Can anyone suggest somewhere within a half day of Wodonga..or a half day from Melbourne?

    Good time to go visit Kakadu and the top end. All the southern tourists (can't call them terrorists anymore; not PC ) flee back down south once the humidity rises. So the place is nearly empty!

    Yeah, nice little town. Not all that far from me, only about300 k's in the S3, about 80 in anything else.

    just be aware that many of the tracks and campgrounds in the Grampians are still closed off after last year's fires. There are a few open.

    I don't think you'll find a quiet spot at the Grampians. I went there early this year for the first time, we did stay at the caravan park as we were joining others there; but that was more crowded than the Mornington peninsula over summer. Way toooooo many people.

    We also tried a day trip to the Cathederal Ranges, which have always been very quiet, but on holidays cars were parked all along the roads and all the grassed areas were taken up with tents.

    I'm sure, like me, you don't want the Refugee Camp model of camping.
