Backhouse Beach, just out of Cobram. Swimming is quite good and if you have a canoe or tinnie even better. No toilets though.Originally Posted by Redback

I havent been to the barmah forest for a while but there was plenty of camping places along the murray river with out being caged in by others![]()
Hi Eddo, some thoughts:
Swampy Plains campsite - in the NSW Koziosko National Park, near Khancoban. Probably 3 hours from Wodonga (can't remember) Awesome campsites, adjoining the Swampy Plains river. Toilets as well. Not sure if its burnt already????? Don't think so, but maybe. Its on flat area - majority of trees around campsite cleared........never been there at Xmas so not sure if busy (guessing it is). A really nice spot!
Sorry, i don't think this was much help at all.
Another option - Mount LAwson - On the Murray Valley Highway (main road from Wodonga to Corryong) near Keotong there is a State Forest called Mount Lawson - very treey (fire risk I suppose) - but should be quite. There are some bush camp sites along the Keotong Creek (plus others). See - http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources05/05_0397.pdf
However -somehwhere along the Murray could be your safest option if fires are a concern. Maybe Barma like others (Rangieman) have suggested. Hope you find a good little, quite, spot!
G'Day Eddo
Cobram/Barooga on the river is where I'll be at some stage ..... wall to wall ... dogs, caravans, busses, boats etc.
Check your map for the Goulburn river, try the state forest anywhere between Murchison and Mooroopna. If you arrive early and have a look around I'm sure you'll find a spot with good river access and privacy...........west side of river around (Opposite)"Arcadia" has some good spots.
Also around Mitchellstown(follow river upstream towards seymour, past Nagambie), local wineries to take your darling![]()
etc.
............shouldn't get too much bombing noise from "Pucka" and the fire risk isn't any worse than anywhere else.
Stevo

yeh I think swampy plains will be choccas as will the accessible spots along the upper (ish) parts of the Murray ie Corryong/Khancoban..I wouldnt bother trying to find an unpopulated camp area there on NYs eve but thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like the Grampians might not be the go either....????
The goulbourn , schmezz (how is the old dog going?), might be a goer...will have to have a look at a map and maybe do a recon afterxmas. Really not into the wall to wall camp scene/refugee model myself...
So the short list is on the Murray at the Bahma state forest and along the Goulbourn somewhere...
cheers
I firmly beliewe that the Grampians are going to be a mess. I know of quite a few families that have cancelled their bookings due to the fires in the HC, and are now off to the Grampians.......
I think I'll spend family time during the holidays doing a few day trips, and end up Fishing the Surf this summer, not going to be much of a Trout season this year..............![]()
Grampians are not much better than the H/C at the moment due to the fires earlier this year....
I'M with Rangieman "Beari" a little town between Tocumwal and Barmah on the Murray. Some nice sandy beaches, good size cod and people a spaced apart nicely.....
