When did Defender's go from 200 to 300TDi

    G'Day All,
I found a 4/95 Defender at Pickles car Auction in Melbourne, but not sure if its a 200 or 300?

Can you tell us if you think it may be a 200 or 300 by its build date please? May not be worth it as its been on its roof and motor may be buggerd anyway.

    G'day Amshaw,

I would say it's almost definately a 300tdi by the build date.

Mine is a November 94 on the compliance plate and she's a 300tdi - though by the build date you'd swear she was a 200tdi.

The changeover was in '94, so by May '95 they should all have been 300tdi's.

Doesn't the 300tdi have a yellow oil cap where as the 200tdi doesn't.

    Easy way to tell.
The 200 engine in the defender the Turbo sits very high on the LH Side. The turbo is above the intake manifold, well almost. With aircleaner infront of it.

300tdi the Turbo is lower than the intake manifold and the air filter is on the RH side.

This only applies to Defenders. Discos look very similar.

It was the Aus compliance plate I was referring to - the LR build plate on mine puts her at May '94, even earlier.

So I would say the '95 is definately a 300tdi.

Another good easy way to check is where the air intake (or where the snorkel goes into the side panel) is - on the 300tdi's it's on the drivers side and on the 200tdi's it's on the passenger side.
