Qld - Finding out prior registration details

    G'day all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out the prior registration details (ie. just the rego number) of a vehicle (currently unregistered) and if so how?

    Cheers

Qld. Transport are very hot on "privacy" and generally refuse to disclose anything about the owner of a registered vehicle or a previously registered vehicle. Once upon a time you could give a rego. number, pay a search fee, and they would give you the owner's name and address. Not so now. I asked for details of a vehicle abandoned outside my renter that would have been a good parts car for my daughter's Volvo. Gave the reason as wishing to contact owner with a view to purchase. Not good enough, said QT. I did some back channel research and found virtually the only acceptable reason was to make a claim for accident damage and you need to have a police report no. to lodge with the application. I also went to register a restored car (sports racer special) that had been registered in Qld. in the fifties. I had no details other than the name and then address of the guy (since deceased) I bought it from thirty years ago, not even the old rego. no. as it was deregistered when I bought it. Proof of prior reg. in Qld. meant I could have registered it again. Onus of proof was on me. Dept. would not assist. So what I had was considered to be an ICV "Individually Constructed Vehicle" that did not comply with current ADR's. Sorry, rego. not possible.

I was afraid of that. It's for Molly and I no longer have the contact details of who I bought her off a couple of years ago.

I know she was serviced at least once by M.R. Auto at Redcliffe so I may see if they still have her records on file.

its not much help but you can sometimes get the previous registration numbers of the vehicle (IE plate numbers) out of the REVS department if the person on the phone is post first cup of coffee and pre first annoying customer...

From the previous plate number you should be able to find what state that plate was sent to therefore what state the vehicle was registered in.

you may also be able to conive the transport dept into giving you the province or locality of last registration(usually accurate to a city sometimes a suburb) from the VIN number if its only to prove where it was originally from for reregistration reasons.

however why do you need to do this, so long as you have proof of ownership and are paying the inspection fees where its been previously registered is irrelevant unless the vehicle is in someway encumbered.

Try a premium Vcheck Grizzly. How long ago did you buy it? Also I think it only works for QLD so if it was a interstate purchase it might not be as much use.

The details of any vehicle previously registered in QLD are available, from day dot. If you have a vin, chassis or engine number, or obviously previous rego.
What they won't give you is any personal details of previous owners.

They have them on an archive system called "ROLS". Majority of operators probably don't know what that is though.

As usual with QT, it's about finding a helpful and intelligent staff member!!

    G'day all,

I need the previous registration details to get her re-registered as I don't have any proof of ownership. It was a cash deal where I purchased an unregistered vehicle...

I know where she was registered beforehand (Brisbane, Qld) and I need the old rego numbers so I can get her re-registered.

I can't use Vcheck as it only works on vehicles manufactured after 1/01/1989..

Thanks for the heads-up on ROLS FenianEel, I'll look into it.

    Grizzly,

You don't need 'real' proof of ownership....

Do a hand written receipt, and this will suffice. I just registered the 81 rangie doing this. I've also registered 100's of cars with these in a previous life

As long you have a chassis number of the vehicle it'll be ok, and they can get previous rego. from the system.

Any dramas or questions, pm me.
