wow 450 AND sand!!!
yea the first cutting is usually the hardest,,
is the big hole still there?
sometimes 2wd's get out from 2 and 3
I imagine it would have been like George street there over new years![]()
Were there any people from here at Double Island between Christmas and New Year?
I saw heaps of Landies. Mostly Defenders followed by Disco1 and series models. Including a dark blue series 3 (???) wagon with a matching trailer made from a rear wagon cut. I got a photo which I'll post up when I download from the camera. There were two Disco3s as well.
I waved to most Landy drivers and got a few little waves back but got a huge wave from a Defender driver when stopped at the Cherry Venture.
Was mostly easy going even though the beach is badly eroded. The recent rain made it easy. That is until we tried to leave this afternoon and got bogged down trying to drive off the beach at the 1st cutting. Had to unhitch the camper trailer which allowed me to drive the Disco out easily and then reversed back up to the trailer from the other side. Then I had to spin the trailer around though and was helped out by two British guys who where sitting with a group of mates watching everyone get bogged. Once the trailer was hooked up again I just cruised out the 2nd cutting. It made me feel better that I had got myself out though and that of all the people who were getting bogged the ones who made it furthest were myself and two other guys and we were all towing trailers.
The eroded beach took its toll on the Discos fuel usage though. Something like 450kms to 90 litres? However the V8 power pulled us through the dodgiest sections with ease. Well except for the 1st cutting
Kept an eye out for you Wazza but never saw your distinctive Defender.
So anyway who else was there?

yes 450km AND sand
I just worked out the economy and it was 457.4kms on the trip meter having used 104.05 litres. That is from Burpengary BP and back so I needed to use one 20L jerry can to get that far. That works out to 22.75L/100kms which isn't nearly as bad as I thought.
The hole is still in the first cutting. They bulldozed the island but left the big hole. I know the first cutting is hardest but it is always the most fun. Getting to watch everyone get stuck. One of the guys bogged with a trailer was in a Prado and to his credit he got out his shovel and started digging. No one helped him and he inched it forward while digging and made it through. Although he didn't have far to go as he made it withing about one metre of the track.
I think with a bit more speed and taking a better set of wheel ruts would have seen me through but I didn't feel like having to extricate myself again.

SWMBO & I went up for the weekend & camped at Inskip.Originally Posted by Utemad

I went armed with snatch strap & spade expecting to bury the car at some stage. Well, I ran at 20psi & it was just unstoppable. I even went looking for trouble; climbing out of ruts & heading for harder stuff, all to no avail. I was a bit dissapointed really, as was looking for at least something difficult to pop up that I could get angry with. I watched many people take huuuuge run ups with car & sand flying everywhere and passengers bouncing about and thought hey goodie here's a challenge, but no, I hit every track there was and it went up each exit in high range at tickover; no fuss, no run up, no revs, no wheelspin, nuthin. Of course I was doing my bit to pack the sand down for the next fellow
. Admittedly, I suspect most of those having serious trouble were probably the type who insist on trying to get around running road pressures.
We took the Freshwater track one day and came upon a Rodeo coming the other way. He attempted to climb out of the ruts as the passing bay was on his side but it just buried itself. While I climbed out of the ruts & into some really deep soft stuff to give him clearway, with plenty of attitude he eventually got it back into the ruts and off he went. He stopped around the bend to make sure we got out ok & as we backed out of this mush without spinning a wheel the look on his face was priceless.
SWMBO & I reckoned he was thinking "Damn I've gotta get me one of those!"
