I think we need to determine what is a "model" and what is a variant of a model. If we take a Series as an example, I consider they are a Series No.? and short or long wheelbase. That is the model. Other identifiers are 4 or 6 cylinders, petrol or diesel but the base model is the Series and wheelbase. Custom build orders such as military vehicles are variants as are aftermarket modified vehicles such as the Fox Engineering underground vehicles. Series III Stage 1 and 110/120's pre Defender are sufficiently different to be considered models.

They could probably go with the Perenties but the civilian 6X6 was different to the military ones - narrower cabin from memory.

    G'day All

Yes Bushie, the Civilian 6x6 was the standard wheel track, the Perenties have a wider chassis and cab 8" wider I think, the rear chassis was designed to takeload sharing rocker type rear suspension, also the Forward Control Series 2 vehicles were designated 2a FC 109wb, in 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder, Series 2B 110wb in 6cyl with 4 as special order, most of those were exported, the 2B had a wider track (increased stability)and strengthend (ENV) diffs. All Standard type Series Landrovers were known as "Bonneted Models" The Series 2a vehicles underwent an update in 1967 at the start of Chassis suffix "D" with the introduction of Negitive Earth Electrics, Key Start with flick switiches,Cable Operated Wipers,a dished all rubber Steering Wheel, and a cranked handbrake lever this was fitted to unable the driver to use it whilst wearing a seatbelt, in late 69, the headlights were moved out to the guards,(Fenders,Wings) to satisify US and European safety regulations.

    cheers

Sorry didn't realise there was a civilian 6x6 that LR produced and marketed (remember I did say "main models" ). Was that done around the same time as the Perentie or earlier / after?

I haven't started splitting the list up into different engine types / wheelbases yet, and you guys are already starting to bamboozle us with specific custom jobs!

I didn't even think about all the custom applications as there are so many different types and styles because one of LR's old selling points was that you could customize them completely... though LR now see's that as it's nemesis as it increases production costs and means they have to keep a manual production line

One step at a time I think.. show of hands if anyone is interested in me breaking them down into wheelbase's and then engine types?

Go for it!! If we end up with a comprehensive list maybe it can be added as a "sticky" somewhere so that it can be easily referred to in the future.
