    Good (or bad) driving

Over Christmas I did about 3000km driving to Melbourne and back and driving round Melbourne. I was rather surprised that other drivers seem to be generally not too bad.

Probably the worst I saw was on the way back on the bit of the Murray Valley Highway that is also part of the Goulburn Valley Highway. I was following a Caravan and another car, a little below the speed limit, but so close that neither of us thought it was worth passing the caravan. A B-Double approached from behind travelling, I would guess, at about 120kph, and passed all three of us at once, through an intersection, on the wrong side of a double line, and then forcing all of us to brake as he cut in to avoid the oncoming traffic.

Also notable was that away from towns I saw NO police (not in marked cars anyway).

You should have taken his rego and reported him to his company and the police. Most good transport companies frown on this sort of stuff. It is idiots like this that kill people.

Not enough traffic volume = not enough speeding $$$ for it to be worthwhile for them

When we went to Fraser in November ( I know it was not peak holiday time ) I was also surprised that from here all the way up and back we did not see anyone doing anything too stupid.

I was fairly impressed with the traffic I have encountered. Only the 1 or 2 idiots and even then not to bad.

Hi John, not meaning to stick up for a truckie for pulling a stupid and by the sounds of it, a dangerous stunt but how far back from the vehicle in front of you were you travelling.

You posted you were happy with the speed but if you had no intentions of overtaking and you don’t leave enough space for others to do so.

You can probably get my point, plus, in NSW, if you travel too close to the vehicle in front of you and you are not intending to overtake, you can be booked for the offence of Convoying.

The law was introduced in the late 70s at the height of the truckies dispute, to stop trucks operating rolling blockades.

If I remember correctly, no matter what you are driving, truck or otherwise, if you are not intending to overtake the vehicle in front of you, you must leave a gap of at least 200m between yourself and the next vehicle in front of you.

The fact the truck managed to get around all three of you does seem to point to you all travelling a lot closer than 200m.

This does not in any way excuse his behaviour but you were also breaking the law.

Point being the truck should not have been going any quicker than 100kph. Clean up a couple of the mess'es they leave behind and see what your thoughts are.
I do agree though you must leave adequate room if you are not going to overtake.

Yeah, I thought these trucks were speed limited, but on a recent road trip to NSW, we were overtaken while doing 130KPH at night, by a double B just north of Mackay. I could not keep up with him!!.

    Hi
On a lot of those trucks you replace the fuse with a blown one and the speed limiter is disabled.Wouldnt want to get caught with no fuse,BIG TROUBLE!!!!
