paying for dumping your old tyres $35 !

What a contrast to where my Mum lives in England!

I helped her take the recycling to the centre, there is a skip bin for everything; magazines; newspaper; glass; green waste; oil; batteries and so on. While I was there the skip bins were being replaced with empty ones as needed and the contents organised in their respective dumps. Not only was this free, but the council supplies plastic rubbish bags for domestic waste and they deliver to the house.

Idiot councils in Oz, could learn much by what has happened in Europe.

They charge for everything these days. each appliance costs, matresses cost and so on. Our local tip is now clossed but the one in Yass is still open.

Actually I have no service at all from my council - the council town is well over 100km away and the nearest tip of their's over 50. So what I do is use the tip at the village 6km away, which is in a different council area, so I'm not supposed to use it - as it is unattended anything and everything is dropped off there. Recycling I take into Dubbo where there are multiple dropoff points for bottles, tins, paper etc.

In Lithgow tip you have to pay to dump most things or so we have heard as we dont go to the lithgow tip but use the Portland or Wallerawang tip as they do not charge and we live exactly in the the middle of the distance between the tips but friends in lithgow are all complaing because the lithgow tip also SELLS rubbish people have thrown out and are still in working order but have ALSO charged someone for DUMPING the stuff so its a profit both ways for the council

It would probably be cheaper for you to get a mini bin, (skip).
Or look in the quokka sometimes people advertise for clean fill, assuming that is what clean fill is and not just sand.

I know we all make rubbish and all need to dispose of it but surlely this is what we pay, (a lot of) rates for?

Rates were originally to cover roads, rubbish collection and other public health measures. Have a think about all the other things that have been added in the last two hundred years.

In my case, despite paying considerable rates, I get just about zero services from the council - I have no rubbish collection, no access to any road maintained by my council, and all the towns in my council area are much further away than the ones I use for other services.

I was down the recycling depot last year ( its the tip, but the stuff is sorted by the customers into green waste etc, and then trucked off to appropriate destinations, and found myself next to a bloke throwing out lovely cedar planks, he apologised for doing this, but said he advertised them with no takers.
Just the stuff for my workbench, I said, and he happily put them on to my trailer, then a couple of business shirt types came from no where and made us chuck them into the pit. I gave them what for, but the guy said the minute you drive in the stuff becomes thier property.
I had another load a couple of hours later and there they were, all mangled up and amongst the green waste:mad:

So I had no problem angle grinding up the air conditioner (it was 25 years old and had lost its refrigerant anyway) and stuffing it into some garbags. They want $35.00 for fridges and $25.00 for air conditioners.
When the girl asked what was in the bags, I said well, we have a labrador.
silly girl just gave me a funny look and asked again, so I said DOG SH$T
Cost 9 Bucks :D

I think, in common law, nothing would be 'theirs' until you've actually dropped it onto their land, for good and forever...

I'm not having a go, but I find this abuse of power (by them) curious and fascinating - and reportable - pm me exact location and we'll take up this with the relevant minister.

And what's he going to do? I understand that this service is "tendered out" to a sub contractor who can distance themselves from government. What I will do, and I assume you are serious, is photograph the sign at the gate and PM you that.

Doesn't matter, they still have to abide by rules and regs.
Being a dump (tip) - the sub would've had its contract written by local government (council) and state regs assume ultimate control over council activities - ie if the council is untoward in its activities it could lose its status (corruption) and be run by a state controlled administrator - which as has been described may be worth a look by the relevant state minister.

directly north of me the Tweed Council was nailed by the state due to ongoing irregularities...

State governments do not like local governments and seek any excuse to 'look closely' at their activities...
