    When to stop..........

Hi. I am reasonably new to this site and this is my first post.

    Now my dilema is...............

Having rolled my 80 Series last year, and knowing how much my wife hated driving the kids to school in it, I decided to replace the 80 with a family wagon and buy myself a bit of cheap fun in the form of a 93 200tdi Disco, which would get me to work and back on a daily basis and also serve as a bush basher at weekends. This came with 293K's on the clock and lots of fruit (front & rear bar, Mud Terrains, lights, dual batteries, rock sliders, Rock Crawler suspension etc etc) and cost me approx $4500.

At 297K I found out what a Harmonic Balancer was after it fell off the crank. 6weeks & $2500 later I had the re-chromed crank back and was on the road again.

At 299K I found out at that Disco's (uniquely?) have a cluch damper attached to the slave and when these go wrong cost abot $400 to replace (with the slave cylinder).

During the repair I was also told that the thrust bearing or possibly even the main gearshaft bearing was noisy and to keep an ear open and start saving my money (on departing my mechanic asked if I would like to make a monthly booking to save on phone calls).

Now I know this was a cheap buy, but I am now starting to think do I sell up and get out now whilst I have a pink slip and working vehicle, or is the worst of it over and I can now enjoy months of trouble free pitching and rolling around Sydney in my pride & joy?

I don't relish the thought of passing these problems on to someone else but I do miss my Toyota, even though I am a Pom and have always hankered after owning a Rangie/Disco (up until actually buying one!).

    What do you think........

Sounds like the last owner passed on his crap to you.

How well did you check the car out before you bought it.

All vehicles including the japcrap will have problems if they are not looked after.

Buying any vehicle with nearly 300,000 k on the clock is always a risk........and I doubt if you bought a toyTrolPaj with 300,000 k's you would have any difference.

Come on - you are a pom, stiff upper lip and all that ...........

It is entirely up to you mate. About 2 weeks before Christmas, I got out of a V8 F100, and into a 79 Series 3, for the same financial reasons. A hot rod V8, that I began to distrust because of break down after break down, in the end it was lucky to start once a week, with out breaking some thing else and draining my pension. the old Landy? Swiss clock. Had to replace an old water pump, not a big deal. Look at the dollars vs fun, reliability? This one decision only you can make. OH and SWMBO, of course. My old uncle called her the chancellor of the exchequer.

    Good luck

    Shorty.

Thanks Ladas - Had a local mechanic and a friend from Newcastle Land Rover Owners club take a look and neither picked the Harmonic Balancer although we knew the gearbox was noisy.

Will now go and cry in my warm beer and think of old blighty.

    Hi Bigdog.
    Welcome aboard.
I can understand you missing the 80Ser,I would never have one,but a good mate has one, goes really good off-road,actually drives really well but is thirsty and incredibly underpowered for a huge lump of a diesel motor.
I can imagine they roll pretty easily after driving my mates, they sit well on a corner till the body roll builds and then all hell breaks loose.
Take a Disco2 with ACE(active conering enhancement) for a spin, they sit flat thru bends, the anti roll bars have hydraulic rams which extend as more body roll occurs, makes a huge difference. My mate with the 80Ser reckons if he could have my diesel power and the ACE in his 80SER he would have the perfect 4x4
Landys are just as bad as any other 4x4,if they have been abused and not serviced correctly they will let you down. All my Landys over the years HAVE let me down from time to time, and I look after them well. But so have all of our other vehicles.
I guess it boils down to the age of the vehicle, the Ks its done and how much you are willing to wear before you go and buy something new that costs you a huge pile of $$$$ and then you take it out of the showroom and loose $$$$ on depreciation.
    Best of luck
    Andrew

sounds like the worst is over but my questions would be...

why didnt the mechanic spot the problems with the front of the box when the crank was off the motor for rechroming... ITs not that big a deal if the engine has come out to get the crank off for work...

but take heart, the worst should be over, welll except maybe the diffs, have a good listen to them and check their slop.

The fact is it is nearly 14 years old and has nearly 300000km on the clock, at that time you will have a few things come up no mater what the vehicle, even more so if you are stuck with on that has had a poor service life.

I reckon get the problems sorted, once they are sorted you will have a good vehicle, you are going to loose more when you sell it, so factor that in aswell. In the end you can get reco Transfer cases and gearboxes, with a new clutch have it fitted and its like new for another 300000km. Get it sorted, you can also save a crap load if you do as much as you can yourself. You and a couple of mates will get a gearbox and transfer case in and out in a weekend over a few beers, its the labour that does the damage dollars wise, if you look around parts can be gotten cheaper. (on departing my mechanic asked if I would like to make a monthly booking to save on phone calls).
Who is working on the vehicle, If he does'nt like Landrovers(eg " I've always been a cruiser man") and knows it's your first he could be milking more work out of you, getting you to come back for things he could of done there and then. eg

Blknight.aussounds like the worst is over but my questions would be...

My Tdi Disco has nearly 300k and touch wood is still going strong.

You asked a Pootrol driver to work on your landy!!!!!!!
He told me he doesn't work on Landy's

Oh well I guess it's who you know. Did you get the LR bagging as well?

That bagging he gave me has cost him a pretty penny in services/repairs to my vehicle alone. Perhaps one day he'll learn to not judge a book by it's cover.
