Where have all the good Disco's gone?

Got a mate who's decided that a Disco needs to join the family for mixture of being comfortable hunting truck for long trips and Mum's Taxi once they get the babymaking right (there's a story there that I won't go into!).

Here's the problem. 18 months ago when I bought ours there were plenty of good ones to choose from. Then 12 months ago when the fuel price started to climb there were HEAPS of them both neat and sh!tty on the market.

The problem? Where have all the NEAT ones gone? The price of all of them has been forced down a few grand again, but now it seems that only the poxy ones prevail? Have the vendors of neat ones all decided NOT to sell because the prices are that low?

He's probably going to go for a V8, wants 1994 or newer, auto or manual (not too fussy) and if possible on gas. There just don't seem to be any neat ones about.

We looked at one today with 78,000km and it's been on the market for about 2 years with the same dealer! Originally they were asking near $15K for it (I looked at it when it was at that price), but now it's down under $10K. In spite of the low km it's now rooted! UV damage from sitting in the yard for 2 years, rust in alpine windows, very low suspension, bias plate and/or springs FUBAR so it doesn't centre in 3rd/4th gate (this was the case when I looked at it).

Anyone got some leads? We've had to drop the gearbox and transfer out of his Bundera and he's just dropped another $1650 on a reco one. The motor is tired and gutless so he's looking for a change in the near future.

Why not look at a ' 93 model, single coil, no cats, easy peasy to fix at reasonable cost, Regards Frank.

That's what I did and couldn't be happier! However, he wants something with no more than 150,000km, preferably less and doesn't like the older interior.

Ray: the brief is at this stage.

how much does he want to spend ??? - as little as necessary, but aiming for around $10-11K. Less if it's going to need additional work inc LPG conversion.

5/7 seater ?? - at the moment I don't think they'll need anything more than a 5 seater. He's a 6'2" 130kg man mountain, she's a 6' tall blonde amazon woman and they have the biggest GSP I have ever seen and a weimaraner that's nearly as big. They won't be able to afford more than two kids!

auto / manual ?? - preference for manual, but auto still a possibility

what color ?? - anything other than rusty

let me know and i'll let you know in a couple of days - thanks!

BTW, one of the main reasons they want a V8 is that his Mrs hates diesels with a passion. According to her diesels sound crap.

    Disco up for grabs

I am considering selling Turtle at the moment. I need a bigger vehicle for a growing family. Turtle is a 1998 Series 1 Disco TDI Auto. B/Bar and winch, dual batteries, air/air and water/air intercooler, Cargo barrier, CD/DVD, 7 seater, Rebuilt transmission, new alternator, +2" springs, LPG injection, roof racks and much more. Goes like a cut snake (for a TDI).

PM me if you want more info and photo's.

You know, I think that part of the problem is that the bottom seems to have fallen out of the market for DI andDII across the board. (there was a post somewhere here very recently that was quoting some really low prices for these vehicles).

I suspect that the net effect of this for many LR owners who have invested in their vehicles (as most of us do with keeping up with LR faults (ouch) and after market gear ) is that we have put so many $ into our 'babies' that we do not want to sell as we would take the proverbial financial bath. I know in my case that the Landy still owes me (to my calcs) over 35K even after six years use from new.

Bottom line is I have buckleys of realising that on a sale , so it is worth far more to me to hold onto and use / enjoy. On the other hand, people who have used and abused a vehicle that they may have acquired second hand might not have the same 'over capitalisation'. This could account for the junk that has been reported on the market.

    My theory anyway...

    Where does your mate live?
I looked all over the eastern states and ended up buying one in Sydney about 5 months ago.

    1994 V8 manual
    I think 153000kms. It was low 150's.
Absolutely immaculate interior and exterior very good.
Base model with factory mags and cruise control
    Niagra grey
    5 door
    6 seat
    Upgraded computer
    2 1/2in exhaust
ARB winch bar and 8000lb Warn winch
    Cargo drawers
    New roof lining
    Sheepskin seat covers
    GME UHF
    GPS mount
    Front/rear spotlights
    Roofracks
    Tyre compressor
Lifted King springs and Bilsteins including steering damper
    Recently replaced clutch
    Towbar
A bunch of unused service parts, snatch strap, winch block, tree protector, 3 way fridge.

All this for $7600 plus plane ticket and fuel. Plus Qld on road costs when I got it home.

I spent months looking for the 'perfect' Disco which this one would be if it was white. Dark grey sucks in the Qld sun but otherwise it is 'the one'.

Unless you want a cheap basher I can't see the point in getting a pre update model anymore.
I bought mine after petrol prices went up. It was $1.40 for unleaded in Sydney when I got mine.
I also found that Sydney and Melbourne were the cheapest places to buy them. They also had more for sale which no doubt pushed the price down.
I looked at yards but some wanted $10k for pre updates and I only absolute peices of unroadworthy crap update models were available below $10k in yards and not much below that privately in Brisbane. I even saw some up to $19990 with rusted alpine windows and dodgy interiors in Brisbane yards.
I was told by more than a few private sellers that their Disco was the best and there was no way I would find one for the price I offered. There was one guy who said that his was the cheapest 98 model Disco in Australia and that I would not find a 98 model for the price I offered (offered $6k as the gearbox was a little notchy and crook paintwork etc). I pointed out that not only was his not the cheapest 98 Disco in Australia but it wasn't even the cheapest on the page of the website! He wasn't interested anyway.

I had two forum members look at Discos for me. One in Victoria and one in Canberra. However the one I bought was sight unseen as I didn't think it would last very long at all.
