I'd agree everyone has their opinion. Those that have lived there see BOTH sides. My eyes were opened considerably after living up there. (High School on)
The claim is based on fact! No different to when you were required to fit "cages" to the rear of utes a few years back. It didn't actually save lives but made it easier to find the parts. Everyone knows what race the majority of those killed in ute rollovers are. Sad but fact. The dissapointing thing about the speed limit I think is that per capita the NT had fewer deaths (remove the "tourists" from the statistics) yet has some of the largest regularly travelled distances and high drinking population (IT's the heat :) that does it) and yet the highways had fewer fatalities.
We are continually being told the three major causes of accidents are speed, alcohol and fatigue. (Call me stupid... thers have! but isn't reducing the speed increasing the time it takes and therefore increasing fatigue?)
The funny thing is most people use to sit on around 130km/h anyway.
