    Gone to Gowings has gone!!!

    Boohoo very sad...

I just heard Gowings grand old store in Market St. has closed after 138 years and they're gone...

Looks like their expansion plans went pearshaped and John Gowing would rather be an investment banker

I loved that daggy old place and the amazing stuff you could get there, from a wooden whistle to an Australian made suit (tassie wool), cheapest Akubra's and RM's I could ever find, bad haircuts, good haircuts - all the same price
I've still got my Gowings card!!!

I used to spend far too long in there, and get far too much stuff that I didn't need, sometimes stuff I did......and most of it was quality Aussie made gear, (obviously that changed a bit in the last 5 years).

But it was just an iconic store with a great feel and wonderful history......

Next they're going to tell me Harrys pie van has turned into a Noodle bar

    Fen:

The last time I was in there was about two years maybe and the prices were serious $$$$.

It had changed a lot from its roots - a lot of overpriced unnecessary yuppie rubbish. And flanny shirts for a hundred bucks!

Didn't surprise me when it went - sad tho' - took their eye off the ball...

I hate it when bits of our (very little) heritage is lost
surley any (preferably austrlian) buyer would have been better than closing it completely?
Unfortunately all these administrators are only in it for the money so if liquidating is worth more $ than selling whole (the offers they got) then they wont hesitate to do it
It’s a shame and I hate to see I happen (not that I ever went there cause it's 800ks away)
