If you are after a usefull long lived utility vehicle then a 110 or Defender (Name change in 1991)is the way to go, the outer body styling hasn't changed much since 1958 but underneath there has been Massive changes, 83 saw the first Coil sprung constant 4 wheel drive with lockable centre diff, anti sway bars were fitted to the 86 onwards wagons. they were available with, 3.5 V8 petrol, 3.9 Isuzu zDiesel,and the 2.5Ltre 200 & 300 TDI Diesels, from 1999 they had a 2.5 5 cylinder TD5 motor.

If you are looking for a little more comfort look at the Series 1 Discovery thay come as the same 2.5 ltre 200/300TDI or 3.5 &3.9 ltre V8 petrol the 99 onwards D2 has the 5cyl TD5

Defenders might be a utility vehicle and exceptionally capable but in 2007 that is still no excuse for poor build quality, poor erconomics and some quirky design aspects - nevertheless they remain attractive to many even if virtually no one buys one new these days (see sales figures) - about as good as new freelanders.

Japanese 4wds are about on road performance with a bit of off road capability whereas LR are an off road vehicle capable of being driven comfortably on road. Still have fond memories of my Series 2 with 186 fitted that used to play up, like, well an old landrover whenever on bitumen but put it on a beach, the temp guage dropped, motor ran smooth and it went anywhere. Trip home was a bugger mind you.

Noisy? Yes
Leaks? Yes
Easy to drive? Yes
Keep up with traffic? Easy just don't use to much load and they can keep up with you.
They are an experience though. You smile more when driving them and enjoy the trip. Talking to the rear passengers is not easy but you can.

Once you own one you will get the bug like the rest of us and wouldn't dream of buying another car, well maybe another l/r, and like someone said on here earlier, what other car in the world still has 80% of all cars ever manufactured still driving around today??? only the fender who care's if they leak are noisy and a bit rough around the edges, that what makes em a classic
