    Forum monitoring by police

Sure, this sort of circumstance may not affect this forum, but it is something to keep in mind.

Seems a fella in his jap sports car had a night out, got busted by the police as unroadworthy, and instead of returning home as suggested, he went out partying then decided to brag about it on a forum. Cop happened to be monitoring said forum, and busted the guy, but good.

    link to story.

Well done to the police for being so dilligent!

Big Brother is watching - Orwell was right.

But while he trapped himself via a computer, I wonder why the cops didn't finger him on the spot?

You're probably right about - here... Land Rovers and hoon cars is an oxymoron.. unless you're the Australian Army.

I think it very unlikely that police would regularly monitor this forum, although as the article says, they may well go to a particular forum (AULRO) to gather information on specific individuals that have come to their attention (as was the case in the article) by other means. Although not mentioned, the policeman (said to be the usual ones) is likely to have recognised the culprit and suspected he did not follow directions, and had a good idea that he might boast about it. Presumably identified him on the forum by the circumstances. If police are, for example, trying to find the person responsible for antisocial behaviour involving a four wheel drive, they would be likely to look here.

As in this case, anyone who uses this forum to boast about any illegal activity would be very unwise - even if it is not monitored by police, it is quite likely that your boast may offend someone who DOES regularly monitor this forum, and is prepared to slip a word to the local constabulary.

    Your so right.

I got dragged by a semi the other day. Truly embarrassing. Granted he had a rolling start.

I got a speeding ticket once. The cop said "is there a reason you were doing 70 in a 60 zone". I said I needed a run up for the hill (that was coming up)... he laughed - but still gave me the ticket.

A bit like in the mid 80s when bike magazine road testers stopped mentioning in their articles what the top speed of the bike was, as some got fingered for admitting to speeding in the print media.

I'd be very surprised if there weren't regular member of any forum who are police officers. I seem to recall at least one member here who is. Bragging about doing something illegal is never the smartest idea

Slander and liable and terrible things - with legal firms trawling the net for work, as well as "Internet crime" police units - the net is certainly under the microscope.

In Australia - the Australian Crime Comission, Federal and State Police all have different units looking at the net - many different reasons why, some more obvious than others - as for the instance of this vehicle hoon, - shows his intelligence to start with. Any investigator in a specialist line of policing worth his salt makes internet checks as a regular part of his investigative practice. You would be surprised what you can find out about people without any special access or privilages and a few simple memberships to key sites.......
