    Imbil SF Red Hill track

This is an offshoot of http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=35023&page=3 by Isuzurover.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Speaking of 4x4ing...

Was up at Imbil SF (camping at the deer farm). They have a plaque up there for people who have climbed red hill - a very steep, very long track that runs along a knife-edge ridge at the top.

The track is loose and rutted, and we could only make it about 1/4 of the way at best (too steep to pull 2nd low, and too much wheelspin in 1st low) - But we drove to the top via another track, then drove down.

The property owner didn't believe we had driven down it, he said it was impossible, that it was so steep we would have been standing on the windscreen the whole way!!!

At the same time, he also tried to convince us that everyone who had successfully made it up (all toyotas of course) had driven up in high range!!!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I went and did the recce but didn't find it. Here is the Ozi track I made. I went up the first track on the left heading East after leave the deer park. I drove as far as the fire tower. I marked a track I thought might be the left turn but didn't take it as I wasn't convinced. The map shows the plantation pine stops and restarts but on the ground it didn't look it.
After I got to the fire tower I just turned around and drove back (after a look at the tower and a short foot recce of another track of course). It was dark by the time I got back.

The road I tracked was a decent single lane dirt road. It has been graded very recently but not from the end I drove in from and not all the way back to the main road. However it is a 2wd road all the same. Although it gets quite steep for a 2wd dirt road just before the fire tower and I imagine you'd be spinning your wheels to the top of it in a 2wd.

When you said you talked to the property owner, who was that? The map has the area marked as a State Forest. Is that part under a lease?

Going by the map it looks like the track (the one I think it is) starts off on a very steep and long uphill and then runs along a ridge.

    Hi Utemad,
As far as I know, the map below shows where Red Hill is. Haven't driven up it yet, almost impossible to walk up it. Turn Left at "Turn Left". Red Hill is at the "350" above my "Red Hill" mark.

    Discomaniac.

No problems. It's not like I went out of my way at all. I've just started tracking all the drivable tracks in that forest for an upcoming club trip anyway so I got one more out of the way .

Tracking will have to wait til next week. It is raining out here and you do NOT want to be in that area when it rains. The track was just a little wet yesterday afternoon when I went in and there was a little straight line drifting done on some sections. Fun when the ground is flat but not so fun on the hills.

As it is I just topped up my leaky transfer case in the rain. Got my legs all wet

Last time I was at Red Hill I had my D2. Might actually give it a go, now I've got the D3 with TR and Rear Diff Lock. (Standard Wrangler HP road tyres might be a worry on that climb though)

    You can say that again.

Almost got stuck in there the first recce I did (and that was on the easy tracks). Had to be winch back up one hill, while a mate in a 4.4v8 SI/RR hybrid with twin lockers sat on the redline in 4th low for about 5 seconds at the crest of the hill, slowly inching forward.

It has rained every day for two weeks in Imbil (weekdays at least) however the tracks dry out fairly quickly if the sun can get to them.

I'll go back Tuesday afternoon if it isn't wet. Will take some pics to go with the maps.

What is the deal with the plaque? Is it just something to say congrats you made it or is it a visitor book? What does it look like?

It is just some silly plaque hanging up at the deer farm - there weren't many names on it - don't know what that means...

pm me your email address and I can email you some photos if you want.
