Defender Security

I remember seeing in one of the UK magazines a cover that deadbolts over the pedal area making it impossible to use all 3 pedals.

Actually one of the best security systems I witnessed was the door handles on my old D1. A group of low-life drunks were trying to get into cars in the street and we watched for 5 minutes as one guy tried to find the door handles on the Disco and couldn't work it out... not like a Land Cruiser...how do you get into this thing:confused: ... he finally gave up and went to the next car (a Hilux).

Defender security is not good by modern standards. Fortunately, the probability of their being stolen is very low (particularly compared to the UK where they are much more common). More likely is theft of property from in them, and there you have the advantage that they are hard to look into compared to lower cars. But still, keeping anything attractive to thieves out of sight is worthwhile.

What do I do? If parking in a suspect area, I fit a club steering lock - and leave the transfer case in neutral and the fuel tap between the two tanks. Also have blinds on the windows and a sun screen on the windscreen to make the interior less attractive.

I have considered fitting mesh on the sliding windows and a car alarm and immobiliser (one problem is when I was looking into this there were no approved immobiliser installers west of the ranges).

I know a bloke around my area who has two heavy duty latches and padlocks on the doors of his sIII, I bagged him out and called him Mr Bean, I got a laugh out of him but then he walked off abruptly. Haven't seen him since.

Yes Uncle Ho I will be doing just that, after waiting for 3 months for the Defender.
Myself I'm going to make up a pedal lock with straight bar and padlock.

A quick google got a list of the top fifteen models stolen - and Landrover did not get a mention. The fifteenth only represented 3% of the 21632 cars stolen (this is for 2005, Australia wide), and the only model on the list not a popular sedan was the Tarrago at number eight. The top five were various model Commodore and Falcon. (see ncars.on.net/)
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the category of cars least likely to be stolen is "full size four wheel drives" and I would think that of these Landrovers would rate at the bottom for most thieves, if only because of perceived poor performance and unfamiliarity.

the original door locks are bloody useless, it is actually harder to get past the locking fuel cap! I fitted an alarm and central locking to mine, if they use a key to unlock the door the central lock instantly locks it again before you can get the door open. the bonus is unlocking the car from across the road when you run to it in the ****ing rain:D
