Not uncommon I've heard of this and a number of other faults. Blown diffs, broken wheel studs, LSD's failing, clutch, brakes,...

Still think the best for an LC was 4 broken door handles in the time it to Toyota to replace the first one. Work had the car parked up as the only way in was via a window - it was less than a month old.

Like the old saying, "they don't make em like they used to"
The other old saying was - if you travel in 4wd territory 80% of the time, you need a landrover, if its 20%, buy a Toyota.
30 years on, it looks to be still relevant.

mmmm, not good, so the moral to the story is a toyo is reliable if you use it for its intended purpose- taking the kids to school and to soccer practice.

This has always ammused me, there are so many people who claim land rovers are unreliable, if you look at the number of warranty claims they are, but how many of those actually make the vehicle undrivable? Bugger all i would imagine.

Now lets look at toyota- mass produced, lack character and personality and just dont cut the mustard over a long period of time. Matt

And 90% are Toyotas. And most of them are 75 or 78 series!

When I went to NT for a holiday last year, I was amazed how many LCs were 75/78 series.

The basic problem is that all four wheel drives (Landrovers perhaps least) have changed their design in response to pressure from their majority customers - who rarely drive offroad or on rough roads, certainly not every day. This has resulted in emphasis on performance, comfort, handling, style - and toughness sort of got left out, since these factors push in the other direction; for example, improved comfort means that the car hits the bumps faster. One of the most telling points is the move to independent suspension, which they just about all have these days.

I can't comment on Toyotas specifically - I haven't had anything to do with them directly for forty years, but I remember then that we always carried half a dozen wheel studs in the glovebox!

I think John sums it up best, outback driving all the time is probably one done by a hand full of onwers, much better to upset them than the thousands who buy them to go on bush tracks once in a blue moon. Matt

Actually I'd say its mostly Troopies for homelands and then 80 series and pre 2003 Prado's. 100's and new Prado's are catching up.

I'm very keen to see how the new 200 Series with all it's electronics will go. I believe the troopy will be about the same electronically as a Td5 Defender.

In the NT if you want to fit in and be anonymous ... drive a white Toyota
