    Bush Winch demo

    Photos taken on 25th Feb West Coast 4x4 club beach outing where we had demonstration of bush winch system.

    system requires you replace some of your wheel nuts with special wheel nuts which hold on the winding drum, the rope is 4mm and 5mm around 400lbs breaking strain. You then simply drive forward or back after securing rope to winch points and cabel winds back onto drum retrieving car out.

    my impressions were very fiddly to set up, woman who owns the company and was helping in the demonstration took 7 goes to fit the winder to the wheel and then it fell off after she walked away. you also had to be careful not to drive over the rope when winding.

    price $1500 - $1600 not cheap

    I made one for bugger all many years ago when I had an MQ Patrol.
    They do work ...sorta, but you've got to be careful you don't overload the studs.

    Had a second Volkswagon rim welded onto the 2 back wheels of my old type 3 padock bomb when I was a kid with 5mm cable on each which did exactly that but was not removable.

    It worked but I don't think looking back at it now that it would have been all that safe as I remember my welds weren't all that good and the cables used to break all the time and I just tied them up in knots.

    I wouldn't pay $1600 for that.

    And way too fiddly.

    Not much good without a difflock. All the power would go to the wheel which is easiest to turn, ie the other one.

    Which means if u needed one you would be twice as bogged. 400lbs breaking strain you say? Hmmm

    Sorry mistype the 4mm line has a claim of 4000lb breaking strain and is designed to break before causing problems for vehcile engine train.

    Demonstration showed that drums pulled/wound on rope independent of each other which is one of the problems l identified with it as requires driver and outside guide to watch the ropes being wound on so they dont spool off drum or get tangled in vehicle steering

    At that price you'd just get a winch. If it was $100 you'd put up with the fiddling around, but not for $1500-$1600.

    I made on of these for My Subaru L Series some years ago and they work very well.
    I don’t think it would be wise to use one on the front of a 100 Series Cruiser but with the Subaru they were perfect.
    BigJon you use a snatch block on the anchor end and there is no need for a diff lock.
    They were used in Africa in the 1970s and I think you will find that they had their origins in the Second World War.
