At Leyland Truck & Bus Brisbane, the registration documentswere never presented for initial registration as a utility truck, but as a truck cab or dropside body. Therein may lay the answer.

the ole mans s2a van ( no second row seats ) was registered as a utility - the up side of this in victoria at the time was cheaper rego -

i remeber years ago in vic a s11 long wheelbase hard top i owned was registered as a ute

on a different note got stopped by police for vehicle check in Morwell Vic, was towing my off road trailer behind the 1998 Nissan 2.8 TD Patrol, the trailer had been built by whitehorse trailers in box hill. The police computer check said the trailer registration details said it was supposed to be a horsetrailer. I said to the young policeman, nope, never has been a horse trailer, never owned horses, never ridden a horse and your victim of a computer input error, as its built by white horse trailers.

Young policeman wasn't prepared to think outside box and detained me for having a illegal trailer as it was supposed to be a horse trailer not a 4wd box trailer. Waited patiently with him on side of road until his sargent came along 30 mins later and said sorry sir computer error off you go and drive safe.

Well he goes out, looks at Grommet and then gets the numbers of the engine and chassis, goes back inside and then looks puzzled.....
He asks if the sides drop down?? i reply "No that would be a Tray"
he then tells me there is no LR ute on the system to register it as. He then asks some other fella who rings a bloke who knows a bloke who kows a gal, she then changes something and next thing i know the papers say LR utility.
On the way out he smiled and asked who converted it...... i smilled back.

Now that is customer Service.............

You must have caught them off guard, they arent usually that helpful.

Or he liked the cut of your jib. Why do you think he pulled strings for you?

I also got pulled over years ago when I was towing caravans for a job with a van that Id just rego'd at vicroads in furn tree gully.
On my way back to the basin, about 3 or 4 kms I was pulled over twice, once because the number plate that vicroads just gave me was of a trailer that was supposed to have been reported stolen and then for the van being un roadworthy.
The number plate problem was remedied by ringing one of the guys down at the VR office that I knew and he confirmed that id just rego'd the van but the roady problem went on for about a week with us having to get engineers certificate to prove that independant suspention was safe on a caravan and the hight of the suspention was fine also.
The suspention was of the same sort of design as a VW rear with the pivot in the centre of the van which made the wheels angle in at the top when compressed and angle in on the bottom when extended and the young copper didnt like the idea as it bounced its way down Forest road behind my F350.
I didnt really like the set up but it towed great and the guy who owned it later converted it to airbags which made it even better.
Buy the way the top step was about 30inchs from the ground so it was pretty high.
