    GPS in Australia

Have and use a Garmin 276C and a TomTom910 for navigation in Europe. Both of these systems have limitations

Am thinking of upgrading to a tough tablet ready for an Aus tour in 08.

So what are peoples comments regarding best GPS system to use in Aus and what are the best mappng to use.

    Regards

    Tarmac or off-road?

The 910 is top of the range stuff, my TTone is pretty easy to use. I'd say just buy the SD card to suit the 910. Won't do much better for street navigation.

For offroad, you've got the choice of the Garmin/Magellan type units, or say OziExplorer on a laptop, connecting to a GPS via a cable or bluetooth. Different concepts.

Can't comment on Garmins, never had one. Have a good look at the Magellan Explorist though, its got the best screen going in a GPS.

OziExplorer - plus a competitor - use images of almost any map you want. The detailed maps take up a bit of room though, all of NSW is about 15 gig. There is a DVD with maps of all of Australia, but these are 1:250,000.

I've got Oziexplorer to work on my mobile phone ok, the limitation is the 2 gig micro sd card.

    Check out oziexplorer.com & gpsoz.com.au

I have a TomTom 910 and they are perfect for tarmac driving - with the AU maps - (not on a SD card as the TT910 doesn't use SD)

but they are not very good OFF the tarmac

I had a Garmin Quest with Mapsource - and it was far far better off the tarmac - even down to some very obscure tracks.

There is quite a bit of choice and I have heard (no personal experience) that oz explorer maps are very good.

Thanks for the links. Will have a look over the weekend.

Am off to the NEC outdoor show today and will have a serious talk with Garmin

    We have a TomTom 910 and a Garmin 276C

The Tom Tom 910 mapping is superior to that of the Garmin and is great for street mapping (with the odd exception) but they suffer from reliability problems. The Garmin 276C is more robust hardware where as the street mapping is poorer then the Tom 910. Having said that it is great for off road as it has track back ability, adjustable scale and compass on board

When you go to the gpsoz web site, browze to garmin, 276C and you will find a link to Tracks4Australia.

You will find that installing Tracks4Australia will be your cheapest option for offroad.

Another good alternative at a very reasonable cost is OZtopo (produced by gpsoz), which also has a link from the 276C page.

I have always found gpsoz to be good people to deal with. I suggest you contact Brian and ask about possible issues using Tracks4Australia or OZtopo with you 276C (eg if you need Garmin base map for Australia.

Forget the TomTom and go the Garmin route. IMO - The tablet may be a little overkill.. It also has the problem that it says "Hey... I've got lots of expensive kit worth nicking".

I toured Oz 18mths ago with my 176C & it was perfect. I'd also recomend you get the external antenna mounted too.

Some of the map data was slightly off when out in the bush but on the whole it was pretty good (that's using Garmin's own data). The map data goes down to street level in the cities, so is ver useful for navigating around.

I would recomend you getting a copy of the Hema set of interior maps as a general reference and then top this up with specific maps of the route you're using.

If you get a chance, get down to Stanfords in London and have a browse through their maps too.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you've got any questions about getting your Landy into & out of Oz.

    Mark.
