Hi As a pom I can tell you my opinion.
It depends where you are going and when.
South Australia region will be bloody cold, I ***** you not !
We brought UK 3 season hooded sleeping bags stayed one night in the back of the vehicle that was enough. In front of a fire the next night. Days are fine though, (south) and you would not need AC
We went throught the centre, (Warburton to Alice) up to Queensland middle of summer, no air. It is do-able but very uncomfortable. Even in winter in NT it's going to be around 25-30 you will need to keep windows shut for the dust so your landy will get nice and warm.
Dunno what it will cost you to install but I suppose you would have to decide for yourself.
Would I do it again............No
Would I do it again with AC, oh yer.
OK can anyone give me an idea of price to have an air con unit fitted to a 96 110 CSW over in Aus?
Believe there is an after market one which fits just across passenger side unlike the LR which goes full width.
Any web addresses would be useful too.

Cost........ HA...
Buy a complete Fender here for less.....
Get one with aircond, if you want to be a tough bushie, just switch it off for a while, when it gets hot out...........:D
Leeds:
I had a unit fitted to a transit van (80s era with the falcon six) for $1500 a while ago, if that helps.
mother had a unit fitted to her Ford Kia Festiva about 5 years back for $1300.
Aussie dollars and nippondenso based devices....
Years ago I worked with a Jap importer who sourced all the gear to do the job for about $500, the rest was labour and markup:eek:   depending on brand - eg little markup on a cheapy car, big markup on an expensive motor..... most cars new in Oz are fitted with air as standard, goes with the territory, we need it...... but in 1980 i drove a 1970 Fairlane around the country and in the middle and the lack of aircon didn't worry me, and that was Feb to Apr..... (must be getting soft to need air these days)
air con is nice, but...
I've been in my Disco this past summer (I live near Byron Bay) without aircon, and while the heat is an annoyance, the external noise is actually a bigger issue, (still bloody hot here during the day!)
running tinted windows, leeds? another thing to consider.......
