Launching Yachts

After some 35 years in the making a local landmark has finally been launched.

The ferro cement hull has been sitting beside the Woronora river at Woronora, slowly taking shape over the decades.

It was launched (sort of) today. Using a 350 tonne crane the 65 tonne (estimated) hull was placed into the water this morning- only there wasn't quite enough water. I believe the crane may have had a subsidance problem with the rear outrigger but not 100% on that. Currently its sitting stranded on the sand and I'm not sure what will happen from here, but I'll do my best to find out.

Launch was with a 1.85m high tide that was going to drop to a low of 0.15m

Lift off

A little more depth would help

It may make the news on either 7 or 9 tonight (they were both there)

The crane cost $22,000 to hire for the day.

It was just on Ch7. It's currently sitting at around 45degrees & they're hoping it will float on the high tide.

This was it just after high tide this morning

I did hear a rumour that the crane didn't put it in the prepared channel. Hope it goes OK, don't know the owner but know his son. According to any one that has seen inside the interior is all hand crafted timber work.

For Mrs Numptys benefit Reg did the engine up (Lister diesel)

It's alot easier and quicker to get an old Land Rover up and running. That boat has been a feature of the Woronora landscape for a bloody long time. It looks good, and I suppose now his son will get a lot of benefit out of it's completion.

Good old Reg, not much he hasn't had his hand in over the last 40 years.

I watched Ch7 news in anticipation too but to no avail.

It reminds me of a concrete hull boat in Brisbane somewhere that has been in their yard for I reckon around 20 years. Not that I remember where it was or when I saw it last. It never seemed to change.

Was looking at the old aerial photography at work the other day - It was there in 1978, previous photos were 1970 when none of the houses were there.
