    Repair or replace County?

The County in my avatar has been running rough, so took it for a service - valves are shot (in a head reconditioned I don't know when). The diff lock was RS when I bought it, A/C is non-functional and heater not much better, rust in doors - most of this I knew about but with an extra $2k or so for the head recon...

The local Stealer has a low kms 1999 Disco II V8 auto 7 seater with ACE for $20k. I know that driving it off the lot will cost as much as fixing the County, but I'll have a newer base, everything works and the missus is keen since she doesn't like driving the County.

Is the price right? Will I kick myself for letting a County go? At least it's not an Isuzu one, right?

I still have the Stage 1, so I can still feel I own a REAL Land Rover...

Two or three plus points, 1) Everything works. 2) If you are getting it from the dealer you will have a 3 month warranty .......and 3) which is more important - it will keep your wife happy

And beleive me a Disco is still a real LR

Its up to you of course, and as you point out, at least it is not an Isuzu and I gather it has factory airconditioning - I suspect I might even go for the Disco in that case. But every time I look at that sort of question myself, I look at the $20k (or whatever it is) and think "I could do an awful lot to the one I've got for that amount of money, and I would have one that I know all the ins and outs of". But sooner or later you are likely to find that there is a point where replacing rather than fixing looks more attractive.

Country Vrs Disco Fight here we come..

Spend 20k on a Td5 Defender, and get the best engine, in the best chaise and giggle all the way along the tracks ...

Or get a disco and wish you got the Defender when you see it drive past you on the same track

20k is a lot for a 1999 V8! I'd be shopping about a bit more for that sort of money! You should be able to step up to a similar year TD5 shouldn't you?

Maybe, but then you'd have to budget another $20k to fix the oil in the harness, oil cooler, head gasket, warped exhaust manifold etc etc etc.

petrol verus diesel, the repair costs are lower on petrol motor which kinda lowers the day to day savings of the diesel TD5 doesn't it.

in daily reading of the threads lot more diesel owners seeking assistance with saving their rigs than petrol versions.

l have owned 2 nissan diesels, 1 nissan petrol and the 93 range rover, l've spent more on the range rover than l ever did on the 3 nissan petrols together to keep it on the road.

Capital depreciation on Land Rovers certainly make them attractive to buy but if your getting hit by the large repair bills for what apparently seems to be me flaws in design or production engineering, l would be steering towards a petrol version for anything pre 2006 out of the Land Rover Factory.

Will wait patiently to see how the new Ford engined Range Rovers and D3 fare in both petrol and diesel versions as for the electronic traction devices be interesting to see how all the 4wds match up over the next 5 years seeing they have all launched products that rely on these technology.
