Thread: To be or not to be Freelander

So what model/engine are we looking at - V6, 1.8, late L series diesel or early TD4. 5 door or 3 door - manual or auto?

If you were to get one, the pick would be a TD4 auto - cheap on fuel, no major design issues, parts are on par for any landy.

Do Not Buy a 1.8 petrol - a bit like owning a 3 litre diesel Patrol - the engine will pack it in sooner or later. Do Not Buy a pre 2000 car - there are design issues with the drive train.

The V6 is OK but just a bit thirsty.

As I said a TD4 auto would be good - but to be honest I thought the Subaru would have been a better choice - the Freelander overall will not be cheaper to run when serviceing is taken into account - the TD4 is really good on fuel though - about 8l/100km around town and about 6 on the highway.

Mrs Rayngie has a 2002 V6 5door Freelander, we have only had it a few months so running costs hav'nt 'averaged' out, it runs brilliantly, had an issue with the keys jamming in the ignition barrel after 2 days of ownership , but warranty fixed that, took it to Alto's for the mother of all services straight away and so far no wukka's, does go through gas, but it is a 6 cylinder, heavy and only a 55l tank, so it's always gonna be a drinker, also, the V6 is very sweet, quiet and smooth, mind you i'm comparing that to my TDi....

they are a good car overall....post 2000 of course..

Wife won't have another Land Rover as a second car, not a problem driving it, she learned on a Series.

Something to do with repairs and having at least one car on the road all the time.

Well it will be a big leap backwards replacing a suby with a freeloader, i think garrycol is the only one here who has a kind word for freo's, run away screaming while you can.

SWMBO has had a 99 Diesel for about 4 years and it is brilliant. no major hassles, uses bugger all fuel, is great fun to drive and does really well on the sand.

..and me makes at least 3. Ace, you about at the moment???

TD4 Auto is the one to go for, don't bother with any of the others.

I've got one of the first Diesel Freelanders and I think they're great. They're also really good off-road. Granted, you have to drive them slightly differently but they will get you through most things if driven with 'passion'.. Where the larger, heavier cars get bogged, the Freelander can 'skim' over the top...

The only problems I've had (that haven't been of my making) is the power steering pump & rack leaking oil.
