lol does that mean at 160,000km they simply change the engine for a new one saves on replacing all the fuel and oil and air filters l guess

Landy's are so hi tech they run a dry sump system like race cars :p

OK so it was a false lead.

It's worth noting that some heavy earthmoving equipment has no facility to drain the engine oil. All they do is check the level, send an oil sample off for routine analysis and top it up as required. And this is stuff that is used 24x7. So its possible we may one day see something this incredible.

LM Range Rover automatic transmissions are supposed to be "fill for life". There's no oil change intervals & they generally fail just outside warranty :( .

Manufacturers of any product, not just vehicles, usually warrant their product for a period, and can refine it by design so that it just lasts barely that long..

If something fails in that period, otherwise known as 'guaranteed product life' they will fix it. After the period has expired, so has the life of the product. Some products will last better than others but just because someone paid $100,000+ for a Range Rover does not mean it will last any longer than a $13,000 Hyundai Getz.

In fact, the more complex an item, the more likely it is that it will fail. Hyundais after all, have a 5yr/ unlimited km warranty.

The bottom line is an items worth has to be evaluated by looking at what it can do for the length of its warranty and assuming its going to be worthless at the end of that period. How many electronic devices can be repaired by the corner store electrician these days? We are living in a throwaway society.

Moral of the tale? Don't spend too much on a vehicle........

So that is why my Disco one had a 12 month warranty when new :D

My Hillman Hunter had a 6 month or 6000 mile warranty when new. I did one trip (Carnarvon-Sydney-Carnarvon) and was out of warranty! The steering was so out of adjustment ex-factory that the front tyres were stuffed by the time I got to Perth (1000km). It was impossible to get anything fixed on a Sunday in Perth in those days - it damn hard getting petrol.
