so how many sides does a triangle have?;)
I know I've related this story before but it bears repeating.
I worked in international telecomms for 37 years so I had a lot of dealings with Americans in the same business. So my expectations were that those people would know a little bit about the world. Doing the job certainly brushed up my knowledge of world cities, etc.
A few years back our company was host to an international meeting in Sydney (actually we did many of the damn things) but I was involved in this one. One of the delegates and his wife were talking to my wife and I over lunch one day when he mentioned they were hiring a car to go to Cairns. We asked how much time he was taking for the trip.
One day.
We explained the distances to him. He was a bit stunned, I think. He said something along the lines that Australia is an island and had less than 20 million people so he'd assumed it was a small place.
I was amazed as this bloke was involved in cableship operations in the Pacific Ocean region and should have known how big the place was. He must have seen charts of the Pacific and an atlas.

This of course depends on your reason for asking and the motivation for such.
Ron said: "ask Quiggers" and that's me.
As a thirty year plus news editor veteran, the CNNNN segs are hilarious, but unbalanced. We didn't see what footage hit the cutting room floor.
The boys at Chaser may have had a hit ratio which was 100% or they may have interviewed dozens in order to get one 'stupid' person.
And this is nt the exclusive domain of the USA
Example: In 1993 I was a senior commercial tv producer for the ALP, I was the guy who organised all 42 tv commercials to get Paul Keating elected...
My crew shot the "John Hewsons 15% GST" commercials at Bankstown Square, which took three days onsite. While we were there many people approached us, asked what we were 'filming'.... my repsonse to all was that we were making the ads for the upcoming election.... the majority response from those who asked me, was, "oh yeah, is there an election on, is there?"
I asked many (dozens) if they knew who the local member was and most did not - he was then, the Prime Minister, Paul Keating and local member...
which says much in many ways - either they didn't care about matters of nation or the sitting member was invisible, locally......
USA is 300 million pax, finding 20 total dopes wouldn't be too hard, (one could knock on the door of the White House, easy to find, 1400 Pennsylvania, ask for 'Dubya' :D :D :D )
